, v ---49-Qw To ALL wHoMiIfr Mar ooNoEnN:
Be it known that I, J. C. CO'OK, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Besoin-Pads; and do hereby declare that thefoliowing is a full andexact description thereof, reference being had to the aecempanying'drawings making part of this specifcation, in which v Figure I is afi-ont elevation of-'my improved pads as, vapplied to the person.
Figure II is a section ot' the same.
Like letters of reference designate corresponding partsv in both'figures.
The nat-ure of my invention consists in tho combination, with an elastic pad of India rubber or similar material, which may be inilatod and expanded with air, of a non-elastic knit covering, madeof the form and size desired for the pad when inflated, so that it will act as a check toany undue 'inflation of the elastic' pad, und serve tovretan the same in a proper and symmetrical form.
In the drawings, A A. represent two India-rubber socks, connected together by a small tube, b, of the same material, which has another tube, e, opening therein, provided with a mouth-piece and stopper, d, by which the two sacks may be inflated with air at the same time. Each of these sackslenclose in a case or covering, com. posed of a knit portion, e, for the outer surface, and a disk, f, otannel or other fabricl of loose, porous texture,
on the inner side oi' the sacks, or that next to the person, with another disk, g, of cottonsilk, or linen, over the former. The edges of these disks, with that of the knit portion, are to `be sewed together, forming the casel or covering for the sacks, and in such a manner that, when applied to the person, the linen or equivalent material will be ncxt to the chest, with the flannel intervening it and the rubber oi`. the sack, while the portion of the sacks not in contact with the person will be covered by the knit material, as represented in the drawings'. I
The knit covering| e is made ofthe form and size to which it-is desired to inflate the elastic sacks, and being non-elastic, or comparatively so, serves the purposeof retaining thc elastic sacks in their desired form and size. Without this denitely-shapedcovering, the size to which the vsacks might be expanded would only be determined by the extent to which the elastic material forming the sackscould be stretched without rupture, and, after being inflated a few times, a distorted form to thepads would be the necessary result.
.'Ihe two pads thus constructed I connect, in front, by an elastic webbing,z, with similar pieecs,z'', attached to the outer edges, to which are fastened the tapc or straps, m m, for tying or otherwise fastening around the shoulders, to retain the pads in proper position. I A i The flannel or other equivalent material absorbs tho-moisture arising from perspiration, and allows the same, from its porous nature, to escape, instead of being confined beneath the pad, as it otherwise would be, by
the impervious nature of the rubber, producing a sweating and disagreeable sensation.
The employment and arrangement et' the central and outer webbing, t, z'z', permits free and full respiration without in any way tending to change the position of the pads. Without their usc,'the expansion and contraction of the chest would cause'a slight lateral movement ot' the pads. l i
Their elastic nature also permits the pads to be' closely fitted to the person, and remain so, withoutthe unhealthy and unpleasant effects which unyiclding straps would produce. V
I do not `claim broadly the construction or mode of inflating the rubber sacks, but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl A bosom-pad, consisting o aniniiatable body o1'sack,provided with a. non-elastic covering of iibrous material, shaped tothe contour and dimension desired, substantially as herein described. A
