Description

R. JACKSON, JR.
SHOULDER PAD AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 19. ran.

Sum a RICHARD JACKSON, JR, OF CANTON, OHIO.
SHOULDER-PAD AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1918.
Application filed May 19, 1917. Serial No. 169,765.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD JACKSON, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Shoulder-Pad and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shoulder pads and the like and has more especial reference to a hollow cushion arranged within the interior of body pads such as are used in athletic games and is equally well adapted to be used in shoulder pads, knee pads, elbow pads or any other pads of this character.
The object of this invention is to provide a Circular or elliptical cushion upon the interior of a shoulder pad or the like for the purpose of protecting the joint upon the wearers body over which the cushion is placed.
Another object is the provision of a shoul der pad or the like with a pneumatic cushion upon the interior thereof.
A further object is the provision of a shoulder pad or the like of the character referred to which will cover the vulnerable points of the wearers body and prevent any serious injury thereto.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an interior view of a shoulder pad embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an interior view of a knee or elbow pad constructed in accordance with my invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring more especially to the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the numerals 11, indicate the collar bone protectors of the usual form of shoulder pad such as .is used by foot ball players,
said collar bone protectors being formed of heavy leather 1 and lined with a padding of heavy felt 2 which is stitched to the leather as indicated at 3. Each half of the collar bone protector is provided with a half round cut-out portion 4 arranged to receive the neck of the wearer and the two halves are connected together by the lacings 5 in the usual manner. The shoulder caps 6 are hingedly connected to the opposite sides of the collar bone protector by means of the leather strips 7, each of said shoulder caps comprising the leather portion 8 and the heavy felt pad lining 9 which is connected to the leather covering by means of stitching 10 around the ed e thereof.
Upon the interior of each of the shoulder caps is provided an elliptical cushion member, which cushion member is provided in the interior of each of the shoulder caps and arranged to be located over the shoulder when the shoulder pad is placed in position upon the wearer. This elliptical cushion is illustrated in the present application as com.- prising a rubber tube 11, which is bent into elliptical form, a string 12 being passed through said tubing for the purpose of holding the ends together. A soft leather covering 13 is placed over the rubber tubing and stitched to the felt padding 9 around the outer and inner edges of the tubing as shown at 14 and 15 respectively, thus formingan elliptical cushion upon the interior of the shoulder cap arranged to be seated upon the point of the shoulder of the wearer.
Each of the shoulder caps is provided with an elastic strap 16 arranged to be located beneath the arms of the wearer in order to hold the shoulder cap in place. Each of these elastic straps is covered with rubber tubing 17 for the purpose of preventing chafing beneath the wearers arm.
In Fig. 3 is illustrated a knee pad or elbow pad 18 embodying my invention. This pad is provided with the usual attaching straps 19 and buckles 20 for the purpose of attaching' the same upon the arm or leg of the wearer, and is lined with the usual felt padding 21, an elliptical cushion 22 being provided upon the interior of said pad and arranged to cover the elbow or knee joint when placed in use upon the wearer. This elliptical cushion is constructed in the same manner as the cushions above described which are provided on the shoulder caps.
It will, of course, be understood that aldrawings as a filler for the cushion that any other suitable material may be substituted for the rubber tubing or if desired the rubber tubing may be inflated forming a pneumatic cushion.
I claim: 1. A pad of the character described, comprising an outer section of heavy leather and an inner section of felt or like mate-rial secured thereto, an elastic incased in a tube to revent chafing of the said elastic upon the Body of the wearer and to secure said pad over a vulnerable part of the wearers body.
2. A pad of the character described, comprising an outer section of heavy leather and an inner section of felt or like material secured thereto, a cushion upon the inner surface of said ad, elastic attaching meansincased in a tublng to prevent chafing upon the body of the wearer, said cushion provided with a central depression and arranged RICHARD JACKSON, JR.
