ooivvERrIBLn COAT AND cars.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN COOPER WHITE- SIDE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new andlmproved Convertible" Coat and Cape, of which the .following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel and its object is to provide a new and improved convertible coat and cape more especially designed for the use of letter carriers, messengers and other persons delivering mail, merchandise and like matter and arranged to protect the carriers sack or means for detachably fastening the half.
cape to a coat.
A. practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the convertible coat and cape as applied;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the coat as applied and with the cape removed;
Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the convertible coat and cape as applied;
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the half capep V Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the upper portion of the coat; and I Fig. 6 is an enlarged transverse section of the coat and cape on the line 66 of Fig. 3.
The body 10 of the coat is provided with a collar 11 and sleeves 12 and the coat is open along the front median line to form flaps 13 and 14 adapted to be fastened to- 'ether in overlapping relation by the use of fastening devices of any approved construction, preferably, however, fastening devices in the form of buckles each having a slotted member 16 fixed to the flap 14 and a member 15 fixed to the flap 13 and provided with a spring-pressed retaining arm' or lever 17 pivoted on the member 15 and adapted to sleeve, as shown in Figs. land 3. body of the half cape 20 is in the form of of the neckband of the collar 11.
' Specification OfLettersPatent. jPatdentedl @ept, 1L 11917, Application filed February 10, 1917. 7 Serial N 0. 147,756.
engage the slotted member 16, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. Ahalf cape 20 is adapted to be removably attachedto the coat to hang over one shoulder and the corresponding sleeve 12, preferably theleft shoulder and the left The a quadrant and slightly in excess thereof, as plainly shown in Fig. 4, and the half capo is provided with a neckband 21 having on its under side fastening members 22 adapted to engage fastening members 23 (see Fig. 5) attached exteriorly to the left-hand side The half cape 20 is provided along its back margin 24 With fastening members 25 adapted to engage the fastening members 26 arranged externally on the body 10 of the coat along the median back line thereof, as plainly in.- dicated in Fig. 5. The fastening members 22, 28 and 25, 26 are preferably of the socket and stud type to permit of readily connecting the members with each other or of disconnecting the same when it is desired to remove the half cape from the coat.
The front margin 27 of the half cape 20 is provided with fastening members 28 preferably similar to the members 16 above referred to, and the said fastening members 28 are spaced relatively to the arms 17 to be engaged by the latter at the time the arms 17 engage the fastening members 15 so that no extra fastening members on the coat body 10 are required for fastening the front of the half cape 20 to the front of the coat body 10.
It will be noticed that the half cape 20 can be readily attached to the neokband of the collar 11 and at the back of the coat so that the half cape overlies the left shoulder and arm of the wearer to effectively protect a bag or a sack suspended in the usual rnanner from the left shoulder of the wearer.
It will also be noticed that the turndown portion of the collar 11 completely covers up the fastening devices 22, 23, and, if de sired, the front of the half cape may be closed by engaging the arms 17 with the fastening members 28. Then the cape is in use, the right arm of the wearer is completely free and unobstructed or unhampered the cape and hence a mail carrier or other person can readily use the right hand for removing letters or other contents from the bag or sack and delivering the same above explained." I
Patent or street coat, as Will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2.
The coat and the half cape are preferably made of Waterproof material. By roviding the half cape instead'of a full cape the wearer has less Weight to carry besides having the freedom of one arm '&and: hand, as
- Having thus described my invention, I claim aS'DGWQHd deslre to secure by Letters 1 LA 'arment' com arisin a coat a half a e i i e 1 cape covering one shoulder and sleeve and extending from the front median line to the back median lineof the coat and fastening means' detachably fastening the saidhalf cape to the said coat along said median lines. 2. Agarlnent, comprising a coat,-a half cape, a set of fastening members arranged exterlorly on'one slde of the coat collar and along the median back line of thecoat, and
'a set of fastening fmember's arranged on the underside of the half ea iie along the collar and along the margin of the rear edge of the 7 half cape, the said half cape fastening mem bers being adapted to be engaged ith'the said "coat fastening members to hold the half cape removably in position on the coat.
3. A garment, comprising a coat provided at its open front-With.- fastening membersto rclose thelcoat front, a half cape, fastening members arranged. along 1 the front OIE; jthe half cape and adapted-tocoact with the said -coat fron'twfastening members to attach the front of the-half cape to the frontgof the coat, coacting fasteningmembers extending along one-half ofthe coat collar and along the capecollanand coactmg fastening members extending along the back median line of the'coat and the back of the cape.
