IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS NURSERY-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,904, dated February 20, 1872.
No. 116,960, dated July 11, 1871, on the ground that the child may possibly turn the center rail or shaft, and thus cause the gate to fall; and the object of this part of my invention is to remedy this objection;.and this part of my invention consists in the combination of a suit able locking device with my patented nurserygate.
In the drawing, Figs. 1 and 2 are detailed views showing a cheap and effective form of locking device and its application to my patented gate. Fig. 3 shows one form of my gate, with the locking device, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, applied to it.
The frame of the gate is marked 0 c. are adjustable heads set into the frame. are the rails. g is the center rail or shaft, in which are placed the screws h h. A is the lockin g device.
In Figs. 1 and 2 l is a spring-bolt, which engages with the toothed-wheel 70, so as to prevent the shaft 9 from turning in the direction required to loosen the gate from the door or window where it is used. Its arrangement in the piece t, and the connection of this piece '1: with the rail eand shaft 9, is plain from the drawing. Where it is desired to turn the shaft 9 so as to loosen the gate, an awl is inserted in the slot in the bolt 1, and it is lifted against the spring, (the awl moving in the slot in the piece z',) until the awl is on a level with the horizontal slot in the piece '5, when the awl is carried sidewise, (moving in the slot in the bolt, and into the horizontal slot in the piece 1,) thus retaining the bolt and preventing it from engaging with the toothed wheel 70.
The second part of my invention relates to the adjustable heads (1 d, and consists in combining adjustable heads with my gate, in order to admit of its better use under certain circumstances. The gate shown in Fig.3 is
intended for use at the head of a stairway, the
heads (1 (1 bearing against a baluster, and the lower head 61 hearing against a projecting wash-board, the upper head 61 being adjusted to bear against the wall. These heads are designed for use in all cases where the wall or other surface is not parallel with the frame 0, and their operations and advantages are obvious. I make them both with and without a rubber-bearing surface, and Sell them separately or with the gate, as desired.
1 claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the locking device A, with any nursery-gate, consisting of the parts 0, g, and e, the whole constructed and operating substantially as described.
2. I claim the combination of one or more adjustable heads d d with my nursery-gate, consisting of the parts 0, g, and e, the whole constructed and operating substantially as described.
