STILTQ Patented Jan; 18, 1887 nc's/Z2???" W Zoaezi WWW ,M d \L J .r a 6 z w 2 w fi M N v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM B. LOVELAND, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,366, dated January 18, 1887. Application filed October 4, 1856. Serial No. 215,279. (No model.)
To all whom it may, concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. LOVELAND, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Stilts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improvement-in stilts, and relates partieularly'to the adj ustability of the same.
Heretolore the only adjustment that has been given to stilts, so far as I am aware, has been through the foot-rest, which has been made capable of being raised and lowered in a variety of ways. Whilesuch an adjustment is desirable in my invention for the purpose of regulating the height of said foot-rest for different-sized persons, it does not, as ordinarily used, give the adjustment that is actually required-that is to say, while the adjustment of the foot-rest at any point upon the standard increases or diminishes its height from the ground, its relation to the handle is never the same, and for this reason such adjustment alone is objectionable.
My invention consists in a stilt having a crutch-rest with an adjustable foot-rest, by means of which the stilt may be adjusted to suit the heights of different persons, and of an extension capablealso of adj ustment, whereby the stilt may be lengthened or shortened to increase or diminish the distance between the foot-rest and the ground without the necessity of moving the said rest.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the same.
In the drawings the stilt-standard is shown at A. It is provided with acrutchrest, B, and an adjustable foot-rest, O. The adjustment of the foot-rest may be provided for, in the manner shown,by a series of holes, in which the shank of the rest is adapted to fit and to be supported by the brace a, the shank being held in place by a set-screw. Instead, however, of the particular method shown, any of the well-known forms may be used. Secured to the standard A is a sliding extension, D, which is secured to the stilt by means of rings d d, which serve as guides. The two parts of the stilts, when combined, form a rounded surface. The extension is capable of sliding on the standard A through the supporting-rings, which are held to the stilt by means of setscrews 0 c. The shank of the foot-rest passes entirely through the stilts and enters openings in the extension, which may thus be supported in any desired position after its adjustment.
I do not limit myself to the form of clamps, as any suitable form may be used for the purpose.
It will be understood that the foot-rest may be adjusted in order to get the proper distance between the crutch-rest and the footrest to suit the person who is to use it. The
foot-rest at any point above the ground, and after the proper adjustment has been madeit is securely held in place by means of the clamps.
I am aware that adjustable stilts have heretofore been known, such stilts being provided with a socket or end piece and a sliding upper piece carrying the foot-rest upon its lower end, with locking devices between the two, so
as to hold them in the desired position, and I do not broadly claim this as my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. A stilt composed of a standard, a footrest independently adjustable on said standard, and an extension, also independently adjustable on said standard, substantially as described.
2. A stilt having an adjustable extension, in combination with the crutch-rest supported rest, substantially as described.
3. A stilt composed of a standard and an extension arranged alongside of said standard and adjustable thereon, a foot-rest, and a series of holes in the standard and in the extension, for the adjustment, of the foot-rest, the shank of the said foot-rest passing through the holes in the standard and entering the recesses in the extension, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
'ILLIAM B. LOVELAND.
