Description

JAMES H. CUTTER.
Improvement in Ice Plows.
N0. 123,873. v Patented Feb. 20,1872.
iii/MM I Izwemiim mz/z UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. CUTTER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN IC E-PLOWS.
- SPEorEIoATroN.
I, JAMES H. CUTTER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Ice-Plows, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 of the drawing is a view of one side of the teeth, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the top of my improved blank or front toothof an ice-plow.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ice-plows, whereby the obstruction of the passage of the teeth of the plow, caused by the blocking up of the groove and the wedging in of the blank or front tooth by the collection of the ice-cuttings in the groove and on the tooth, is prevented.
My improvements consist in forming the blank or front tooth of an ice-plow with a broad flat face sloping back to the main body of the tooth, and curving outward from top to bottom, instead of constructing it as heretofore, of one even surface with a straight face and curved back, so that in its passage on the ice it lifts up and throws out of the groove the ice-shavings, and leaves a clear passage for the other teeth of the plow; and, moreover, prevents the ice from collecting on the tooth and wed ging it in the groove, which very often occurs when the blank tooth is made straight and of an even thickness throughout.
In ordinary ice-plows all of the cutting-teeth represented in the drawing by the letters a a. a a are made with a curved face, I) b b b, and with a flange, f, sloping to the main body of the tooth, back from the face, and the front or blank tooth is formed with a straight'face of an even thickness with the rest of the tooth and with a curved back.
In my improvements the face 01 of the front or blank-tooth 0 is curved out from the top to the bottom, and formed with a flange, 0, similar to the other teeth, a a a a. By the curved arrangement of the front tooth c the whole face of the tooth is not exposed to the action of the ice-cuttings, which are thrown up out of the groove, which is kept clear for the passage of the other teeth a a a a by the broad face 61 of the tooth c.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is-
An ice-plow, having its front or blank tooth 0 formed with a flange, e, and curving outward from top to bottom, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses: JAMES H. CUTTER.
