THOMAS D. FOLSOM AND CHARLES W. FOLSOM, OF CLINTONVILLE, ALABAMA.
COTTON-SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
Application filed July 10, 1912. Serial No. 708,631.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS D. FoLsoM and CHARLES WV. FoLsoM, citizens of the United States, residing at Clintonville, in the county of Coffee and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices which are known as cotton scrapers and which are used in connection with a plow of the bull tongue or other type for the purpose of cultivating between the rows and for other purposes.
The invention has for its object to produce a scraper of simple and efficient construction which shall be shaped or set to operate in the most efiicient manner and which shall be so constructed as to retain its set when submitted to ordinary or even to rough usage.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a scraper constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blade seen at an angle to expose the upper rear edge of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-- 1 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The scraper blade, which is an integral forging or casting, may be regarded as comprising a central portion 1 included between the dotted lines acm in Fig. 1, the intermediate portions 2, 2 included between the dotted lines wm and g y, and the wing portions 3 extending beyond the dotted lines y-y. The central portion 1, which has an aperture 4: for the passage of the bolt or fastening member on which the blade is mounted for operation, is of equal thickness between the lines a2:r; that is to say, the thickness thereof does not vary horizontally between the vertical center and the ends of said center portion as defined by the lines :c0c, although the center portion, as well as the remainder portion of the blade, is'made of decreasing thickness from the upper edge and downwardly toward the lower edge which constitutes a sharp cutting edge. The maximum thickness of the center portion 1 at the upper edge of said portion may be from a to inch, according to the dimensions of the blade. The intermediate portions 2, 2 and the wing portions 33 diverge rearwardly from the center portion, and the intermediate portions which are defined by the dotted lines w-m and 1 4 are of gradually decreasing thickness, horizontally, the thickness decreasing from to =3 of an inch or from s to l of an inch, according to the dimensions of the blade. The exact dimensions and the exact decrease of the thickness of the portions 2, 2 between the lines xa2 and g y may, however, be varied according to circumstances. The wing portions 8, 3 are horizontally of the same thick ness throughout between the lines 1 4 and the outer extremities of said wing portions. It will be seen that a blade constructed as herein described has a center portion of comparatively great thickness which is calculated to resist wear and to prevent accidental displacement or dislocation of the rearwardly diverging intermediate portion. The thickness of said intermediate portions decreases gradually in an outward direction to the points defined by the lines y-y, thus maintaining great strength and rigidity, although to a gradually decreasing extent, in an outward or rearward direction, as the need for resisting ability becomes less pronounced. The wing portions 3 are made of a thickness throughout which is suiiicient to resist wear under any conditions that are apt to be encountered. and said wing portions are at the same time sufficiently light to enable the blade to be made of relatively light weight and also enabling the blade to be manufactured at a reasonable expense.
The improved scraper blade, as will be seen, is extremely simple in construction,
throughout, said intermediate portions being horizontally of gradually decreasing thickness, and said Wing portions being horizontally of equal thickness throughout.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of three Witnesses.
