WALTER DEWITT KEMP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FACE-PROTECTOR.
Application filed October 10, 1916.
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVAL'rnR Dnwrr'r KEMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to face protectors, and has for some of its objects the provision of a device of this character having means for maintaining the protector or shield away from the face which will permit of free upward and downward circulation of air between the protector and the face of the wearer; which will prevent the elements from driving the protector inwardly against the face; and which protector will place no limit upon the normal range of vision of the wearer.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so combined as to eo-act and cooperate with each other in the performance of the functions and the acconiplishment of the results herein contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations the species illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows the device as employed, fixed before the face;
Fig. 2 is a view looking downward show ing the relation of the fixing r securing members and the nose support projecting member; and,
Fig. 3 is a side view showing detail of the nose support projector.
type, cellulose acetate being fire resisting and possessing other desirable qualities, so
fashioned and adapted as to cover the face, including the eyes, nose and mouth.
This flexible light transmitting facial protective member is provided with rearwardly extending securing or fixing members 2, which are movably secured to the light transmitting face protecting member 1 by the hinge bearing members 5, the securing or fixing members 2 being preferably pivoted to the hinge bearing members and terminating rearwardly in a curved portion Specification of Letters Patent.

adapted to engage the ears of the wearer, as more particularly shown in Fig. 3. The flexible light transmitting face protector is also provided with the nose bearing support or projector 4L adapted to contact the nose and provided with the intervening project-ing member 3 adapted to maintain the face protecting member in a position out of contact with the major portion of the face for the purpose of securing ventilation, air circulation, and comfort.
The hinge bearing members 5 may be located at any selective point at or near the periphery of the light transmitting face protector or shield, so long as they are intermediate of the upper and lower boundary of the shield. The securing or fixing members 2 are preferably secured to the face shield or protector through the actuation of the hinge bearing members 5 by means i of suitable pivots.
In placing the device in position for wearing the ear hook portion of the fixing members are simply placed over the ears, whereupon the nose bearing support 4t assumes its correct position on the nose. It is obvious that the device may be as readily removed. The securing members 2 may be readily folded against the flexible face protector and the top and bottom portions of the protector may be bent over into a folded position, so that the device would occupy small space and could be carried conveniently in a small case. as a goggle case.
The light transmitting face protective member 1 may be of colorless, transparent or translucent material, so that the face of the wearer may be seen and recognized, or it may be colored as desired.
The materials composing the various members of the combination may be of any suitable kind or character and the several members may be combined in any suitable or convenient manner, and they may be of any suitable form or shape, so long as the flexible face portion is in one piece, covers the eyes, nose and mouth, is adapted to be secured and fixed before the face through supports located at a point intermediate of the upper and lower boundary and is projected from the face by a suitable intervening member lo cated at the inner surface and at a point within the boundary and preferably in nose contacting relation; and so iong as the various members co-act and cooperate to perform the functions and produce the results desired, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It will be noted that the present invention comprises a frameless flexible one piece light transmitting shield adapted to cover the eyes, nose and mouth, which frameless shield is supported by oppositely disposed lateral supports united and, joined directly to the flexible shield whereby difiiculties experienced in light transmitting shields provided with metal frames by reason of rusting, and marring the face, are avoid.ed, shadows ordinarily induced. thereby prevented, and weight occasioned thereby ob viated.
The nose rest adapted to extend the shield from the face and provide a coolingcirculation of air betweenrit and the face is oined or united to the flexible shield centrally in such a manner that adjustmentand securing of the position of the shield isobtained, as distinguished from supportsextending from a border or frame from above, or sidewise,
so disposed that their supporting lines are v not centrally disposed orbearing presented equally from all directions toward the sup-' port.
It will be noted that the face. protector, in accordance with the present invention, is provided with means attached below the eyes of the wearer, for. maintaining the surface of the protector away from the face,
and specifically constitutes a nose rest, whereby free upward passage, ventilation and circulation-of air from top to bottom, between the face and the protector may be carried on and is secured, and which means or nose rest is attached to the protector in a position which will be below the eyes of the wearer and which will provide an unobstructed field of vision to the wearer.
Having now describedmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A face protector, com-prising a one piece flexible light transmitting member adapted to cover the eyes, nose and mouth, a nose contacting membersecured tovtheprotector at a point below the eyes of the wearer whereby the top and bottom of the light transmitting member is heldfrom contact with the face of thewearer, thereby permittingfree upward passage of air between the face and the protector without obstructing the field ofyision, and suitable means for securing said protector in proper position on the wearer.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of October, 1916.
