Description

A.C.BALLARD. Improvement in Folding Tablesrs', No.123,806. 059,1 Patented Feb.2o,1ea72.

PATENT GEEICE.
ALFRED C. BALLARD, OF WINOOSKI, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 123,806, dated February 20, 1872.
Specification describing anew and Improved Folding-Table, invented by ALFRED G. BAL LARD ,of Winooski, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont.
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved folding-table, the line c c, Fig.2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 7c 7c, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same showing it folded together. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to so arrange an ordinary or any drop-leaf table that it can be folded into a small space forrconvenient transportation; and consists, principally, in the application of drop-leaves, which can be folded under the box' or frame of the table-top, and in their combination with'folding-legs.
A in the drawing represents the table-top, affixed rigidly to the box or frame B. C C are the drop leaves, connected by hinges a a, with the sides of the table-top, but jointed, so that each leaf consists of two pieces, b and d, hinged together at e. The inner piece b of each leaf is equal in'width to the height of the box B, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 3, and can, therefore, as in said figure, be folded against the side ofthe box, while the outer part, d, of
the jointed lear` is folded under the box.
In this manner, the upper part of the table can be conveniently folded into quite a small space. rlhe legs D D of the table are pivoted within the box in such manner that they can be folded into the same, as in Figs. 1 and 3. When they are folded together, and the leaves also folded against and under the box, the eutire table will be no larger than the box with the thickness of the leaves added to its width and depth. Whenthe legs are swung down for supporting the table, they are held in place by means of suitable hooks or catches ff. The drop leaves, when extended, are supported on suitable pivoted or hinged bracgrets or bars, g.
Having thus described my intention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In folding-tables, I claim la folding-leaf, C, formed of a piece, d, hinged ate, to another piece, b, which is itselil hinged 'at a to the sides of the table-top, all as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the jointed dropleaves C C, with the box or frame B and folding-legs D D of a table, substantially as herein shown and described. l
ALFRED C. BALLARD.
