" lNVENTOR wwmEssEs ATTORN EY ANKER PETERSEN, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Application filed June 17, 1916. Serial No. 104,313.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Armin: PETERSEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved clamp for use by boat builders and the principal object of the invention is to provide a clamp which can be used for holding the boards in tight engagement with the ribs of a boat and in tight engagement with the boards beneath them while nailing the boards in place.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the clamp that it may be used upon the curved portions of the ribs as well as upon the straight portions thereof and to further so construct this clamp that it will not slip when in use and release the boards while they are being nailed to the ribs of the boat.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp which will be strong and durable and composed of a few number of parts.
Thi invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the clamp in use.
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation showing the clamp in use.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the clamp in top plan, and
Fig. A is a view showing the clamp in vertical section with the wedge and boat rib in elevation.
This clamp is provided with a frame having side bars 10 which are connected by the cross bar. 11 and have their forward end portions or inner end portions provided with openings 12 to receive the securing or abutment pins 13. The outer end portions or rear end portions of these side bars carry a pin 14 which serves as a pivot pin for the arm 15, the free end of which is provided with an enlarged cross head 16 having a depending flange 17. The inner I face of this head is provided intermediate its length with a cutout forming a seat 18 to receive the rib 19 and it will thus be seen that when in use, the clamp will be prevented from having transverse movement of the rib.
When in use, the clamp is put in place above the board 20 to be secured to the rib 19 with the arms 10 extending upon opposite sides of the rib 19. The abutment or securing pin 13 is then put in place and a protecting block 21 is put in place beneath the clamp head 16 so that this clamp head will not. come in direct contact with the boards to be secured. This prevents the edge of the board from being scarred. After the clamp is in position as shown, with the rib 19 extending through the seat 18 and with the clamping arm 16 engaging the wedge 21, the wedge 22 is placed between the rib 19 and the pin 13 and the wedges driven tightly into place. This will tighten the clamp and the board 20 will be held in tight engagement with the board beneath it and also in tight engagement with the rib. After the securing nails have been put in place, the clamp can then be removed and a new board then put in place and secured by the clamp. It is of course obvious, that more than one clamp would be necessary for each board and that a clamp could. be placed at each end of the board and as many as necessary at points throughout the length of the board, one being placed at each rib if desired. It will thus be seen that this clamp does not need any adjusting for use upon different sizes of ribs and it will be further seen that the clamp will remain securely in place and not slip and further that the board will be securely held in place.
What is claimed is:
A bolt clamp comprising a frame having arms for extending upon opposite sides of a boat rib, a cross bar connecting said arms for engaging the outer face of a rib, an engaging arm pivotally mounted between the outer end portions of the arms of said frame and terminating in a head having a depending flange extending from its outer edge portion and having its inner edge portion provided with abutments for engaging the side faces of a rib, a tapering wedge for fitting between a plank and the freeend of the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature engaging arm and between the flange and in presence of two Witnesses.
the outer face of a rib, and tightening means ANKER PETERSEN. for holding the cross bar. of the clamp in tight engagement with the outer face of a rib.
Witnesses:
ELISHA DAIGLE, Mrs. CALVIN WINZLQW.
