BED ATTACHMENT- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Application filed July 23, 1914. Serial No. 852,660.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. RnY- NoLDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Bedford, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, land exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to furniture and has special reference to an attachment for beds adapted to constitute an upstanding side guard.
More particularly the invention relates to an attachment of the above character applicable to the ordinary brass or iron beds and adapted to iit varying lengths of such beds.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified device of this character so arranged that 1t Ymay be applied to different lengths of beds and when so applied will prevent the occupant of the bed (such as a child) from falling out of bed.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views and:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed showing the device applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the adjusting means. v U
Fig. 4 is a detail of one of the grip hooks.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there are disclosed end rails 10 arranged to extend vertically. Each of these end rails is provided with hooks 11 covered with elastic tubing 12 so that when applied to the posts 13 of a bed 14 they will not mar the finish on said posts. Extending toward each other from these posts are top rails 15 and bottom rails 16. One of these top rails 15 has a projecting member 17 which telescopes within a socket portion 18 of the other rail 15, the rails'being preferably tubular. Extending from one bottom rail 16 is a projecting member 19 telescoping within a socket portion 20 of the other bottom member. This member 19 is provided on its upper surface with ratchet teeth 21 and projecting upward from thev socket portion 20 is a housing 22 wherein is mounted a pawl member in the form of a plunger 23 provided with a stem 24 projecting through the top of the housing and carrying on its upper end a grip 25. This pawl coperates with the ratchet teeth to hold the two halves of the guard in adjusted position. rIhe pawl is normally urged downward by a coil spring 26 mounted within the housing 22 and surrounding the stem 24.
In using the device the hooks on one end member are applied to the post at one end of a bed. The projecting members are then inserted in their sockets and pushed inward, the hooks on the remaining end member being guided into position on the remaining bed post. When thus adjusted the pawl and ratchet device will prevent accidental disengagement or loosening of the guard. As can readily be seen, the device can be applied to different lengths of beds without diiiiculty.
There has thus been provided a simple and elicient device of the kind described and of the character specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A detachable and separable bed attachment provided with common means to hold the parts together in adjusted position and attached to the bed, comprising a pair of separable guard sections, one of which carries an elongated ratchet bar extending in the direction of the length of said section edly Connected to the respective sections, Witnesses:
and the other of Which is provided with a In testimony whereof, I affix my signapawl to lock the sections together in adture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
justed position, each of said sections being Y Y provided With bed post engaging hooks X- CHARLES H' REYNOLDS' said ratchet and pavvl also serving to hold ELIAS C. LYNN, said hooks in engagement with said posts. OSCAR ALDSTADT.
