Attempts have been made to employ a belt in lieu. of suspenders, but because of the natural tendency of the belt to drop down and rest upon the hip bone, resulting in supporting the trousers too far below the "waist line, it has become almost'the universal practiceto wear belts merely for appearance and to utilize suspenders in addition.

With these and further objects in view,

as will in part become apparent and in part: ,be. stated, the invention comprises certain novel, constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specified and claimed. 7

As all of said 'clasps are exactly alike 7 only one is shown in detail, and does not require detail description since any appropriate clamp or engaging device may be used. As best. seen in Fig. 4, the upper terminal of each arm 3 is slightly twisted or bent laterally to cause the clasps 4t toassume a set corresponding angular-1y to the relation of the upper line or the trousers at the two points of engagement. In addition to thecrelative adjustment of arms 3 rendered possible by aperturesflfiand bolts 7, clasp 1 can be moved to a greater or less distance from the planes of clasps 4 merely by moving the free ends of arms 3 toward each, other or apart. It will be further noted that, in operation, that portion of the trousers band between clasps a of one of the suspension stays serves as a tension mem ber preventing lateral separation of the up per ends of the arms of the respective stay, lateral approach being-resisted by the entire, remaining portionof the trouserband, and the flexibility of the trouser band will naturally be such as to allow freedom for such play of the arms of the stay as will comport with the ease' and comfort of the-wearer during use.

In lieu of the clasps-at'the ends of the arms or bars of the several forms of stays,

other connecting means may be employed within the spirit and scope of the invention,

and a very simple substitute Would be an eyelet or aperture at each end of the respective bar adapted to be Stitched to the trou- 'sers and belt.

What I claim is 1..A device for connecting trousers to a supporting belt, comprising apair of arms connected together at their lower ends and diverging upwardly, a trousers engaging element mounted upon the upper endof each'arm-and adapted for engagement with the upper edge portion of the trousers and to move with and upon the arms to accompivotally'connected together at their lower ends and diverging upwardly, a clamp pivotally mounted upon the upper end of each arm and adapted for engagement with the upper edge of the trousers and to swing with and upon the arms to accommodate the movements of the body, and a third clamp pivotally mounted upon the lower connected ends of the arms for clamping engagement with a belt to support the arms in upwardly diverging relation and admit of the free adjustment of the arms about their pivotal connection. l

3.v A device for connecting trousers to a supporting belt, comprising a pair of up- Wardly diverging arms pivotally connected at their lower ends, each of said arms comprising a pair of adjustably connected liat bars, a clamp mounted upon the upper end of each arm and adapted to be secured to the upper edge of the trousers, and a'third clamp mounted upon the lower connected ends of the arms and adapted to be secured upon a belt, said upper and lower clamps being pivotally mounted upon the opposite ends of the arms to adapt the clamps to the flexing of the trousers and the belt, and said arms being adjustable to vary the spacing of the belt from the upper edge ol'tho trousers.
