IMPROVEMENT lN COMBINED KNlFE-AND-FORK CLEANERS, KNlFE-SHARPENERS, AND CAN- OPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,386, dated February 6, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improved Combined Knife-and-Fork Gleaner, Knife- Sharpener, and Gan- Opener, invented by FREDERICK WM. EGHTERNAGH and MILTON J. \VELCH, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania.
Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, of our improved instrument. Fig 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line a c, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the upper lever, showing it applied as a can opener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new instrument, whose objects will fully appear from the title. It is of compact form, and can be produced at a trifling cost, and therefore made accessible to every household. The instrument consists of two principal parts, .A and B, A being the fixed lower part or base, and B the movable and removable upper part or lever. The base is made of cast metal or other material, and can, by screws or other means, be secured upon a table or support, 0, of suitable kind. Between lips to a that project from the sides of the base A is held a hardgrit cake, b, with rounded top, as shown. From one end of the base A projects a perforated post or ear (I. The lever B is also made of cast metal or other material, with a hook, e, at one end to catch into and fit through the perforated post (I, and with a handle, f, at the other end. A hard-grit cake, 9, is afiixed to the under side of the lever, and held between projecting lips h h of the same, as showninFig.2. Knives 0r forks to be scoured are drawn back and forth between the cakes I) g, and their surfaces properly cleaned by contact therewith. The face of the cake g is flat or, otherwise, that of b may be flat, while 9 is rounded, the rounded form being desirable to fit the concave faces of the forks. In posts 43 and j, which project from the upper face of the lever B, are, respectively, secured a pin, It, and a small cutter, l, both of which, when the lever is detached from the base A, as in Fig. 3, can be used for cutting circular pieces out of can-tops. To the face of the post iis furthermore secured a steel plate, m, having a V-notch to serve as a knife-sharpener. It is used by drawing the blade to be sharpened alternately inclined against the edges of the notch through the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combined ki'iife-and-fork cleaner, knifesharpener, and can-opener, consisting of the base A, cake I), and of the lever B, cake g, pin 70, cutter l, and notched plate m, all combined substantially in the manner herein shown and described,
FREDERICK \VM. ECHTEENAOH. MILTON J. VVELOH.
