UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TAILORS CHALK-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 9, 1907.
Application filed January 9,1907. Serial No. 351,570.
- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM IDOV, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tailors Chalk-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a plain and simple implement which should, in the first place, speedily and without complication sharpen the chalk. In the second place, I provide a receptacle wherein the shavings from the chalk are gathered and may thus be melted and used again. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the following accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 shows the blade. Fig. 4 shows an end elevation of my invention, and Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a piece of tailors chalk.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Tailors chalk-Sharpeners having the same object in view have been used heretofore, but have failed to give satisfaction, inasmuch as the machinery was too complicated, expensive, and clumsy.
My invention is designed to overcome all these defects by using a plain and simple implement with but one blade or knife, composed either of one or of two parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base, which is in the nature of an oblong block, and may be made of wood or metal.
B represents the upright blade or knife, made of metal either in one piece or in two pieces. In either case the center is shaped in a V form. This blade extends above the surface of the block or base and rests within a transverse groove F. C is a metal bar occupying the bottom of the groove and upon which the lower edge of the knife bears directly to take the wear off the block.
D is a receptacle cut in the base A, wherein the shavings of the chalk F fall when passing the V-shaped cut in B in order to be sharpened. This receptacle is formed immediately at one side of the groove F, the end half more or less of the block at the other side being solid. The knife being located in the groove so situated, it follows that it constitutes a continuation of the rear wall or inner upright bounding-surface of said receptacle.
F is the chalk which tailors, and especially cutters, use and which it is intended should be sharpened by this implement. hen the chalk F passes through the V-shaped cut of B, the chalk is sharpened instantly in a plain and simple form, and the shavings thereof fall into the receptacle D and may be taken out therefrom and again melted, kneaded, and used.
E represents arms attached to the knives B, which are fastened by screws to the base A.
By forming the base of the sharpener as a block and chambering only one-half thereof, the remainder being left solid, I provide a device which is exceedingly stable and which will not be shifted or overbalanced by the operation of sharpening. The stability of the device is also due to the central disposition of the knife.
It will be noted that the knife is mounted very securely on the block. The arms E extending rearward over and secured to the upper surface of thc'solid portion cooperate with the groove F to hold the knife rigid and to brace it against strain.
It will be noted that the knife extends at either end beyond the interior of the receptacle, so that it may be fully supported by the groove.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A ohalk-sharpener consisting of an oblong block having one end half constituted as an open-top chamber and the other end half solid, and an upstanding V-slotted knife disposed transversely of said block and sub stantially centrally thereof.
2. A chalk-sharpener consisting of a block having an opentop chamber or receptacle formed in one portion thereof, and an upright V-slotted knife extending above the surface of said block and forming a continuation of one of the walls of said chamber.
3. A chalk-sharpener consisting of an oblong block having one of its end halves formed as an open-top receptacle, and an upright V-slotted knife extending above the surface of said block at the inner side of the interior of said receptacle.
4. A chalk-sharpener consisting of an oblong block having one of its end halves formed as an open-top receptacle, and an upright V-slotted knife extending above said block at the inner side of the interior of said receptacle, and having arms extending rear Ward oppositely from said receptacle and secured to the surface of the block.
5. A chalk-sharpener consisting of an oblong block having its top surface divided transversely by a groove, the portion of the block at one side of said groove being consti tuted as an open-top receptacle, an upright V-slotted knife standing in said groove and projecting therein at either end beyond the interior of said receptacle, and having rear- Ward-extending arms securing it to the surface of the portion on the block at the other side of the groove from said receptacle.
v 6. A chalk-sharpener consisting of an oblong block having its top surface divided my invention I have signed my name, in-
presence of two Witnesses, this 9th day of January, 1907.
