T. MABBETT. ICE SHREDDER OR SHAVER.
Patented July 4, 1893.
f -v/ 'lllllllllllllll/l W/ TNE SSE S UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TRUMAN MABBETT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ICE SHREDDER OR SHAVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 500,923, dated July 4, 1893.
v Application filed May l0, 1892. Serial No. 432'416- (N0 model- To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TRUMAN MABBETT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia., State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ice Shredders or Shavers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a device for shreding or shaving ice, constructed of parts hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l represents a section of an ice shredder and shaver embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawingszA designates a cup in the bottom B of which is a throat C. Rising from one of the walls of said throatis an inclined bed D, with which is connected a blade E, the latter being placed at an inclination, and having slots F therein, whereby by means of screws G which pass freely through the same and enter the bed D, said blade is held in position, and may be adjusted so as to penetrate the ice to a greater extent. The bed D rises above the bottom wall of the cup, and forms a chamber A in the lower part of the cup back of the bed.
The cup is provided with a handle H, and hinged lid J, the latter preventing the stream of shred or shaved ice from escaping during the production of the same, and the former permitting the proper manipulation and overturning of the device. The blade is reversible and has one edge serrated as at K, and the other edge sharpened as at L, the serrations being adapted to shred the ice, and the sharp edge to shave the same according to requirements, the blade being properly applied to the bed so as to present the desired edge to the ice.
The operation is as follows, the parts being in position shown in Fig. 1:-The device is moved over the ice, whereby the shreds or shavings are carried up by the blade into the cup, where they are deposited, the lid J preventing the escape of the same at the top of the cup. The cup is now overturned, witl1- out loss of the contents, and when the same is held over the desired receptacle, the lid is opened, whereby the ice drops out and is accordingly collected.
In order to permit the lid to be opened by the hand which grasps the handle H, I secure a piece M to the hinged end of the lid, the same being accessible by the thumb, the effect of which is evident. The bed D which rises from one of the walls of the throat C, as has been stated, and is consequently above the bottom of the cup, strengthens said wall where the blade is subjected to strain, and provides an increased bearing surface for said blade, thus firmly and steadily supporting the same, it also serving by its inclinanation and that of the blade to direct the ice to the chamberA of the cup, wherebyit overturns and is prevented from packing just above the throat. p
The cup and handle may be made separate from the bottom, or the latter may be cast with the handle, or all of said parts being formed integral. Y Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An ice shredder consisting of a cup having a lid, a throat in its bottom, a bed rising from said bottom, and a blade with a serrated edge secured to said bed on the inclined reinforced side thereof, said bed being elevated above said bottom, leaving a chamber in the lower part of the cup back of said bed, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. An ice'shredder and shaver consisting of a cup with lid and handle, said cup having a 4throat in its bottom, a bed forming a reinforced wall for said throat, and a blade adjustably secured to said bed, said bed rising from the bottom of the cup, forminga chamber back of the same and said parts being combined substantially as described.
TRUMAN MABBETT.
