COMBINED ICE PICK, SHAVER, AND SCOOP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,463, dated August 25, 1891. Application filed October 16, 1890. Serial No. 368,286. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK KARCH KAISER, of Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and improved Combined Ice Pick, Shaver, and Scoop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an implement adapted more especially for use by housekeepers, grocers, and dispensers of liquids such as soda and mineral waters or other beverageswho have occasion to use ice in broken, crushed, or shaved condition.

The invention has for itsobject to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device by means of which ice may be cut or reduced, as required, and with economy of time and labor.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the ice pick and scoop,.as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, 1n which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig.2 is aside elevation thereof partly broken away and in section, and Fig. 3 is a front end view of the device with the pick in transverse section on the line a: a: in Fig. 2.

The ice-pick consists of a metal blade A, provided at its forward end with a point a, which inclines forward and upward at an angle with the bottom or back edge a of the blade, to which the scoop-body B is fastened by screws or pins 1) b. At its back end the pick-blade has a tang a to which the handle 0 of the device is rigidly fastened and by which the instrument is operated either as a pick or a shaver or a scoop, as hereinafter more fully explained. The upper or outer edge a of the pick-blade is preferably concaved lengthwise to reduce the weight and incidentally to give the scoop a larger iceholding capacity.

The scoop-body B has a concavo-convex form transversely and tapers a little toward its front end, whereat or wherein are preferably provided a series of ice cutting or shaving teeth D, produced, preferably,by notchin g the scoop-body. I also provide for said body a cover E, which is notchedat e e at opposite ends to fit around or straddle the ice-pick blade A and conforms to the margin of the scoop-body at the back end and both sides, but is reduced in area at the forward end to provide a mouth or throat F, through which ice cut or shaved off by the body-teeth D may pass freely into the scoop, which comprises the body and cover B E, which together form a closed receptacle having considerable capacity,

The cover is secured to the scoop-body by catching underneath an undercut lip or prong G, formed on or fixed to the pick-blade A near its front end or pick-point and by a latchbutton H, which is turned onits pivot h, so as to overlie the cover after it is adjusted to the front retaining'lip G. This latch or fastening for the scoop-cover is very simple and eifective and allows almost instant removal of the cover at any time desired; but any other approved latch devices may be employed to hold the cover in place within the scope of my invention.

In operating this improved implement it will be grasped by its handle 0, and the pickblade point a may be driven into a lump or cake of ice to break it up when comparatively large pieces'of it are required for any purpose, the scoop then not interfering in the least with the effective operation'of the pick. If shaved ice or very fine pieces of it are required, the implement will be grasped by the handle and the forward teeth D of the scoopbody 13 will be run along the face or side of a cake of ice, and the particles removed from the cake by the teeth or shaving-cutters will pass rearward into the scoop through the throat F, next the cutters, and the cover E will retain the cut or shaved ice within the scoop to avoid waste of it and prevent wetting of adjacent parts of the ice-receptacle or any other substances therein. The forward end of the cover E acts as a gage or guard to regulate the depth at which the front end or teeth of the scoop-body cuts into the iceblock, and thereby assures uniform size of the cut or shaved ice. The forward cutting end of the scoop-body is not necessarily provided with teeth D, as it may be simply sharpened to an edge and used effectively; but the teeth IOO assure easier and finer cutting, and are preferred for this reason. Should the ice cuttings clog or choke up within the scoop, it requires but a moments time to release the cover E, which may then be slid along while its slot 6 is astride of the pick-blade A to quickly push or sweep the ice from the scoopbody. The cover may then be readjusted to the body and blade of the instrument. The use of a spoon or other separate implement for removing adhering ice or substances from the scoop-body is thus rendered unnecessary. The edge a of the pick-blade A gives such substantial support to the center of the bottom of the scoop-body that said bottom may safely be used without injury to the scoop for cracking ice directly in the hand in substantially the same manner as the handle of an ordinary ice-pick is used. The implement may also be used forloosening and dispensing any caked or granulated substance, as will be readily understood, and when so used the cover will be preferably removed.

Having thus described my invention, what'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1.'A combined ice pick, shaver, and scoop comprising a scoop-body having its forward edge formed with a cutting-edge and provided with a cover and with a pick projecting beyond the cutting-edge, substantially as described.

2. In a combined ice pick, shaver, and scoop, the combination, with a scoop-body, of a blade secured in the bottom of the scoop-body and provided at one end with a handle and at the other with a point. projecting beyond the edge of the scoop and forming a pick, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. A combined ice pick and scoop comprising a hand bar or blade having a pick-point, a scoop-body held to and along the blade behind the pick-point, and a cover for the scoopbody retaining its contents, substantially as described.

4. A combined ice pick and scoop comprising a hand bar or blade having a pick-point, a scoop-body held to and along the blade behind the pick-point, a detachable cover for the scoop-body retaining its contents, and catch or latch devices for the cover, substantially as described.

5. A combined ice pick and scoop comprising a hand bar or blade having a pick-point, a scoop-body held to and along the blade behind the pick-point, and a gage-plate retained at the pick-blade next its point and controlling the depth of out of the forward end of the scoop, substantially as described.

(5. A combined ice pick and scoop comprising a hand bar or blade having a pick-point, a scoop-body held to and along the blade behind the pick-point, and a cover for the scoopbody retaining its contents, said cover extending at the front of the implement nearly to the forward cutting-edge of the scoop-body, substantially as described, whereby the cover forms a gage controlling the depth of cut of the scoop-body'and provides a throat admitting the cut ice or substance to the scoop, as set forth.

7. A scoop having a body provided with a re-enforcing bar or blade extending along its central portion, said bar or blade projecting beyond the forward edge of the scoop-body to form a pick, substantially as described, whereby the scoop-body may be used without injury to it as a crusher for ice or other substances, as set forth.

S. A combined ice pick and scoop comprising a handled blade A, havinga pick-point a, and a scoop-body B, having a toothed front cutting-edge D and fastened to and along the back or bottom edge of the blade, with the pick-point projecting beyond the toothed edge of the scoop-body, substantially as described.

9. Acombined ice pick and scoop comprising a handled blade A, having a pick-point a,
