To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT M. PRESTON, a citizen of the United States,and a resident of Broxton, in the county of Coffee and Stateof Georgia, have invented a new` and Improved Ice-Shaver, of whichv the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to implements for shaving ice and like substances, and consists of a body formed to receive the shaved ice, and carrying a shaving blade and a movable member constitutingva lidfor the body and operable to force the shavedV ice from the body, the body havingfpreferably, a plurality of compartments vwhich Vare simultaneously filled with the ice. l

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durabledevice for shaving ice and the like, for use by beverage vendors and others, which-is so constructed that it can be easily manipulated to ll the compartments thereof with finely shaved ice from a solid block `or lump of ice; from which the shaved ice can be easily removed without the necessityl of strikingtheimplement against a counter or `similar object; and from which the shaved ice can be removed from the compartments independently.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter' and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the 'accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an embodiment of the device on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, showing certain of the parts in different positions in dotted outline; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the implement having, parts broken away; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sec-` tion on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that the devicev can be employed wherever it is desired to shave ice, that is, to remove from a block or lump of ice a quantity of finely subdivided ice for Vthe purpose of preparing beverages, etc.l

Needless to say, the implement can also be employed for `shaving other substances which lend themselves to this operation. yI have found that withcertain ofthe imple-i ments commonly used for this purpose, it is difficult to remove the shaved ice therefrom without striking `the implement against a fixed object, or employing a spoon or the like for removing the material. Both of these operations are inconvenient and in Volve a loss of time, while my device entirely obviates these difficulties.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide a frame or body having side walls 10 and a bottom 11, preferably integral therewith. The body is open at the top and is divided into two compartments, by a substantially central partition 12. The sides of the partition, at the forward ends, are angularly cut away as is shown most clearly in Fig. 1. At the back, the side walls which have tapered extensions 13, are connected by a cross member 14 constituting a hand-rest and `suitably formed for this purpose, being Patented Sept. *7, 1909.

The latter has recesses 23 to lighten the same. 1t will be understood that the provision of the slot V21 permits the blade'to be adjusted upward or downward to vary the projection of the Vcutting edge 24 thereof through a transverse slot 25 in the bottom 11. By tightening the screw, 'the head of which fits snugly in `an outwardly tapered part of the opening 20, the blade can be suitably clamped in v place.

Lids 26 are arranged between the upper edges ofthe respective walls 10 and the partition 12, and are pivotally mounted in position by means of a common pin 27, passing through suitable bearing extensions 28 at the under sidesof the lids. The latter have the end portions angularly disposed to lit ,against the downwardly inclined forward ends of the side walls and the partition and to lie in the plane .of the inclined rear zend of the partition, terminating adjacent to the upper end of the blade holder. The partition is preferably tapered from the rear end to the front, so that the resulting `compartments fia-re outwardly to permit the shaved materials to be removed more easily therefrom. It will be understood that byV swinging the lids upward, the rear ends enter the compartments and tend to force the material out through the open front of the body, the taper of the compartments assisting therein. In this way is obviated the necessity of striking the device against a iXed object or otherwise aiding the removal Yof the material.

The partition at therear has a curved or beveled edged part 31 which divides the material entering through the slot 25 and directs it to both compartments. The curvature of this part of the partition is to permit the blade hold er to be inserted into 4position. Y

The device can be fashioned from any suitable material, certain of the parts being "preferably cast integral, from Vmetal ad-apted to the purpose, The lids may be under-cut for the sake of lightness andare preferably provided at edges at the rear, with cut away

32 and 33 to permit the rear ends of the lids to enter the compartments freely. The edge portions of the lids vin front of the pin 27 are laterally extended to seat upon the partition of the side walls when the lids are closed. Y Similarly, the forward end edges 34 of the lids are beveled to fit against the bottom 11 when the lids are closed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to vsecure by Letters Patent:

1. A device of the class described, .coniprising a hollow body, a shaving blade earried thereby, and a pivoted lid member normally formi-ng a closure for said body and arranged to swing inwardly at one end, whereby it serves to force the shaved ice from said body.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a body having an open-ended com- Y partment, said compartment flaring outwardly toward said open end, a lid for closing said compartment, said lid being arranged to swing, whereby p art of said lid can enter said compartment to force the material therefrom', and a shaving blade carA ried by said body.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a body having a plurality of conipartmentS, lids for closing said compartments, the said lids being mounted to swing independently of each other and having their rear ends arranged to enter the compartments when the lids are swung, and a common shaving blade.

A device of the class described, comprising a body" having a plurality of compartments, said compartments being openen'ded and flaring outwardly to their open ends, swing-ing lids normally closing said compartments and adapted to have )arts move into said compartments when sai lids lare open, and a common shaving blade.

5. A device of the class described, comprising a `hollow body, a shaving blade carried by said body, a blade holder engaging said blade and having a curved face for directing the shaved ice from the edge of said blade into said body, and a swinging lid mounted upon said body and adapted to have a part moved into said body when said lid is open.

6. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow body having a slot in the bottom thereof, a back adjacent to said slot and formed to carry a blade, a blade adjustably mounted on said back, a blade holder mounted upon said blade and serving to hold the same in position, said blade holder having a curved face for directing shaved ice from said slot into said body, a lid pivotally mounted upon said body and having an end laterally disposed, whereby said end enters said body when said lid is swung upwardly, and a hand-rest rigid with said body.

7. A device of the class described, coniprising a body havino spaced sides, a partition between said si es, a back connecting said sides, lids pivotally mounted between said partition and said sides and serving to close the apertures formed between said )artition and said sides, a hand-rest exten ing from one of said sides to the other, a slot in the bottom of said body, a shaving blade adjustably mounted on said back and having the edge projected through said slot, and a blade holder mounted upon said blade and having a curved face for directing the shaved ice in-to the said body.

8. A device of the class described, comprising a body having spaced sides, a partition between said sides, forming compartments, a back connecting said sides, lids pivotally mounted between said partition and said sides and serving to close the apertures formed between said partition and said sides, a hand-rest extending from one of said sides to the other, a slot in the bottom of said body, a shaving blade having the edge projected through said slot, and a blade holder mounted upon said blade, said lids having parts adapted to swing into said compartments when said lids are raised, to force the material from said compartments, said blade holder having a curved face permitting said lids to swing freely.

9. A device of the class described, comprising a body having spaced sides, a parti tion between said sides, a back connecting said sides, lids pivotally mounted between said partition and said sides and serving to close the apertures formed between said partition and said sides, a hand-rest extending from one of said sides to the other, a slot in the bottom of said body, a shaving blade having the edge projected through said slot, and a blade holder mounted upon said blade and` having a curved face adjacent to the said slot for directing the shaved ice into the said body at each side of the partition, said partition adjacent to said back having a rentrant, cut-away part permitting the insertion of said blade holder, said partition at said part having a sharpened edge.
