SCHOALEEJ, AND THE ESTATE O33 THOMAS DEVLIN, DECEASED, A COPABTNEESHIP TRADING ASNATIONAL SPE- CIALTY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PHILADELEHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
POTATO SLICER;
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VI LIAM J. Bus- SINGER, a c1tizen of the United States, res ding in the city and county of Philadelphia,
To the" above ends, my invention consists of a novel construction of a frame-work or body provided with .a horizontally disposed trough, in which the potatoes or other veg.- etables to be sliced'are received and are actuated or impelled by: a. longitudinally movable plunger, towards the slicing devices, which are composed of sharpened blades rectangularly arranged in a detachable frame. 7 It further consists of a novel construction of racks and pinions on either side ofthe trough, in which the potato or other vegetable to be sliced is received, in conjunction with actuating mechanism common thereto and to the movable plunger, by which the slicing operations are effected.
It further consists in a novel construction of movable head having a plunger provided with a plurality of rectangular tapering pro jections arranged in rows, said-plunger being capable ofbeing readily disengaged from thesupporting head, so that it can be washed or cleaned, according to requirements.
It further consists of a novel manner of detachably supporting and damping in position thefframe containing the rectangularly arranged cutting blades; whereby the potato or otheryegetable is sliced.
It further consists of a novel manner of casting and assembling-the various elements,
composingthe bodyfor framework of the sl cer, the trough, actuating. mechamsm, and
their adjuncts, whereby the manufacture and assembling ofthe device can be eflfected with great economy.
I tur e ons stent tl ree j fea u es 'FiguregQ. v "Figure l represents section on line 4-4 Application filed August 11, 1222. serial N 581,050
of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth. i
For thepurpose of illustrating my inven tic-i1, I have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since they will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is'not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as 'herein shown and described I Figure 1 represents a perspective view or a potato or other my invention. Figure 2 represents FigureL' Y Figuretl vegetable slicer embodying a top plan view=of Figure 2, showing the manner of supporting and clamping the slicing mechanism." Figure 5 represents a section online Figure 4:, showing the arrangeinent of the cutting blades. i
Figureo represents on an enlarged scale as section on l ne 6-4) Figure 2, showing the manner of securing inposition the plunger with'respect to its support and actuating head.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures Referring to drawings l. designates my novel construction of potato or other vegetable slicer, the same comprising-a body or upright portion, composed 'ota pair of upright inembers 2 having the, base 3 and the upper outwardly inclined terminal flanges 4, which engage the r creme.
represents a section on-line 3-3 inclined. walls 5, whereby a horizontally dis posed trough is formed. in which the potato or other vegetable to be sliced is received, and propelled towards, the slicing devices.
' "The inclined trough forming members .5 are, each provided with :the' pair of outer lugs 6, against which are secured'the racks? b y means of the transverse bolts or other f asten ing devices 8, s'aidfbolts being screwed into said lugs and it being apparent that the teeth on the upper portion of said racks are rigidly supported in parallelism and in horizontal alignment.
9 designates pinions, which are fast on the shaft 10, which is rotatably mounted in the ears 11 of thehead 1.2, which is in the form of a vertical rectangular plate arranged. so
' as to [it in the trough formed by the walls 5,
ment, said washers being secured in position by the screws 17; The foregoing constitutes a neat and readily assembledydevice for securing the head 12 and its adjuncts in position, and as will be understood from Figure 3, serves toretain' the pinions 9 in engagement with their racks, at all times.
The head 12 is provided with a vertical slot 18 therein, which is engaged bythe wing nut 19, the threaded portion of which engages the plunger 2( The plunger 20 is provided with a back wall 21, which carries a seriesofjforwardly projecting tapering rectangular or pyramidal projections 22, which align with the square openings 23 formed between the sharpened blades 24 e and 25,1 which are arranged at right angles in'the rectangular frame 26. as will be understood from Flgures 1 and l. The. frame 26 is supported in a V-shaped seat composed of the upwardly diverging bottom walls 27. which are preferably cast upon the V-shaped walls 5 and meet at the bottom-apex 28. To
one of-said walls is hinged. at 29 the top" clamping frame composed of the downwardly diverging walls 30, and the lower end of one of said walls is provided with a slot 31,-which is engaged by the threaded stem 32, which is pivotally mounted at 33' and .en-- gaged by a wing nut 3-4:, it being apparent that when said wing nut 34: is loosened and the threaded stem 32 dropped, the top clamping frame composed of the members can he lifted into the position seen. in dotted linesin Figure 4', whereupon the rectangular frame 26 carrying the blades 21- and 25 can be removed and washed or cleaned.
'The pinions 9 are provided with guards 35, which have a central. hole therethrough. through which passes the ends of the shaft .10. The crank handle 36 issecured to one end of; the shaft 10 and the cotter'pinR'T passing through the other end of said. shaft retains the latter in assembled position with respect tofithe pinionsand the guards 35,
' it being apparent that the crank handle 36,
shaft 10 and pinions 35 rotate as a unit and that theengagement of the said pinions with the teeth of the racks 7 causes the head 12 and the plunger 20 toreciprocate to and from the cutting or slicing devices 2el and 25.
The slicer is clamped to a table, shelf or other support 39 by the clamp 38.
The operation is as follows: The parts appearing as seen in Figure l, the potato orother article to be sliced is placed in the trough formed between the inclined walls 5, between the plunger 20 and the slicing devices seen at the left of Figure 1. The handle 36 is then actuated, whereupon the potato is propelled towards the slicing devices, and the tapered rectangular projections, 22 entering the aligning squares 23 will force the potato through them,- and the potato will be sliced into the form of elongated rectangles commonly known, when fried as French fried potatoes. The plunger 20 is now in its extreme left'hand position, and the members 22 have passed through the aligning squares 23. Upon turning the handle. 36into the position seen in Figure 1, the other parts assume the positionfiseen therein.
It will be apparent that the actuation of the handle 86 rotates the shaft 10 and pinions 9 as a unit and the engagement of said pinions with the stationary racks 7, effects the forward and backward movement of the plunger 20, and its adjuncts.--For convenience of manufacture, I cast the inclined sides 5, the l-shaped walls 27 and the well 4.0 seen in. Figure2, togethergsaid wall 40 serving tolimit the outward movement of the plunger by thecontact of the portion 13 therewith.
The variouselements of which my novel device is composed canbe cheaply cast and. assembled together without the employment of skilled labour, and a minimum amount of machining is required, as is evident.
While my invention is particularly adapted for slicing French fried potatoesQit can be used for other purposes as is evident.
