3 Claims.
This invention relates to a slicing machine for slicing vegetables and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide means for feeding the article against the knives and means for adjusting the knives for producing slices of the required thickness.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several Views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device. Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the device.
Figure 3 is an end view with the feeding means removed.
Figure 4 is a rear view of the knife base with parts in section. Figure 5 is a View looking into the inner end of the feeding means.
Figure 6 is a rear view of the knife base. Figure 7 is a view of a slotted member attached to the knife base when the projecting blades are in use.
Figure 8 is a view of the holder of the knife base.

Figure 12 is a face view of another form of from, the chute being connected by the braces 3 with the open ended portion of the casing. A 55 flattened bar 4 is connected to the closed end of the casing and has a hooked shaped lower part 5 which has a clamping screw 6 so that the device can be clamped to a table or the like. A brace 6 is connected to the lower end of the chute and a part of this bar.
A ring-shaped member 1 removably fits over the open end of the casing and has a substantially semi-circular member 8 connected to its lower part which forms a holder for the vegetables to be sliced and this member 8 has a 10 longitudinally extending slot 9 in its bottom which forms a guideway for a flanged tubular part It] slidably arranged on an upright rod II which has a horizontally arranged tubular portion l2 at its lower end. The ends of the tu- 5 bular portion are reduced and threaded to receive the caps l3 and a horizontally arranged rod 14 passes through the tubular part l2 and these caps I 3 and has its ends fastened in the depending parts I5 connected with the member 20 8 with its rear end projecting from the rear part l5 so that a ring I6 on the rear cap 13 can be placed over this projected end of the rod l4 when the tubular member of the rod I I has been moved rearwardly. When this is done the parts 25 are held in the rearward position. A presser plate I! has its ends bent rearwardly as shown in l8 and these ends are fastened to the rod I I and the face of this plate is formed with the perforations l9 which provide projections at the 30 front of the plate. A spring 20 has one end connected to the rear end of the member 8 and the other end to the lower part I8 of the presser plate and this spring tends to hold the parts in forward position as shown in Figure 2. How- 35 ever, by pulling upon the ring It the member l2 with the rod II and the presser plate will be moved rearwardly so that a vegetable to be sliced can be placed in the member 8 and then by releasing the ring the spring 28 will force the parts forwardly so that the vegetable will be moved into the front or forward end of the holder 8, so that the knives hereinafter to be described will slice the same. The member 1 carries the hooks 2| one at each side thereof for engaging the projections 22 on a semi-circular spring wire 23 which has its major portion soldered or otherwise connected with the lower portion of the part I, the ends being free so that the said ends can be pressed inwardly to release the projections 22 from the hooks 2| so that the feeding'means can be separated from the casing.
A spring 24 surrounds the rod II and is 10- 55 cated between the lower member l8 and the flange of the member ID and acts to frictionally hold the parts in position and permits movement of the parts by the spring 28.
I also provide a holding member 25 in the holder 8 which includes a horizontal part 25' and a substantially arcuate-shaped lower part 25", this part 25 resting against a side wall of the holder 8. The inner end of the part 25' has an upstanding portion 28 having an eye at its upper end for receiving the bent end of the rod 21 which passes through an ear I at the upper portion of the part 1 and a spring 28 on the rod tends to hold the member 25 in lowered position and permits said member to raise when a large vegetable is placed in the device. This stop member 25 acts to hold the vegetables in place and prevents the vegetables from going over the front of the blade and by making the device movable, when cutting potatoes, for instance which have high spots on them the device can be raised to rest on the high spots.
A substantially yoke-shaped part 29 has a tubular shank 38 which passes through a hole in the closed end of the casing I and through a hole in the bar 4 and through a bushing 3| passing through said hole and the outer end of the tubular shank 38 is threaded to receive a gear 33 and a nut 34. The yoke is formed with a flat part 35 and has its extremities bent and perforated, the perforations receiving the threaded lugs 35 on a cross bar 37 of a substantially disk-shaped knife base 38. After the lugs are passed through the perforations in the extremities of the yoke the nuts 39 are threaded on the studs to hold the base to the yoke. The disk 38 is provided with the oppositely arranged openlugs 48 each of which has a substantially semicircular side wall, the opposite wall being substantially straight and the opposite wall of one opening is recessed as shown at 4|. The cross piece 31 at its center is formed with a raised portion 3'! which is located between the inner ends of the openings.
A substantially semi-circular plate 42 is provided with a plurality of slots 43, as shown in Figure 7, and the plate is provided with the perforated tongues 44 the perforations of which are adapted to receive the threaded lugs 45 on the rear of the base 38, nuts 46 being threaded on the studs 45 to hold the plate extending across that opening 40 which is provided with the recess 4| in its straight wall. The tongues are slightly offset and one of them is provided with a wide base 44' for fitting in the recess 4| and when the plate 42 is in position its front face will be flush with the front face of the disk 38 with the plate closing the opening.
A stub shaft 41 is connected with the part 31' of the disk 38 and is adapted to enter an opening 48 formed in the lower end of a supporting member 49, the upper end of which is of hook shape and is connected to the upper portion of the part 1.
I provide a plurality of different kinds of blades or knife members, the drawings showing two. Each assembly includes a substantially H-shaped member 58 as shown in Figure 9 with a stem 5| connected to the cross piece of the member 58 and having its other end threaded. The stem is adapted to pass through the tubular shank 38 of the yoke with its threaded end projecting from the end of the shank where it receives a nut 52. The limbs 50 of the member 58 are adapted to straddle the part 35 of the yoke so as to insure the blade assembly rotating with the yoke and the other ends of said limbs 50' receive the part 31 of the disk 38 between them. A spring 53 surrounds the stem 5| and bears against the cross piece of the member 50 and against the part 35 of the yoke and tends to move the knife assembly toward the disk and this movement is controlled by the thumb nut 52.
The blade assembly shown in Figures 9, 10, and 11 includes a pair of blades 54 having their inner ends connected to the H-shaped member 50 as shown in Figure 9 and each blade has a substantially semi-circular cutting edge 55 with its rear part sloping upwardly and outwardly as shown at 56. Each blade is adapted to enter an opening 40, as shown in Figure 10 with the cutting edge of the blade slightly spaced in front of the disk 33 so that it will slice a vegetable and the rear portion 55 will cause the slices to drop into the chute 2 after they pass through the opening 40.
As before stated by adjusting the thumb nut 52 the extension of the blade in front of the disk 38 can be regulated so that slices of various thicknesses can be produced. The blade assembly shown in Figures 2, 3, 4, and 12 has one of its blades 54' made similar to the blade of the device shown in Figure 9, but the other blade or wing is flat as shown at 68 and has the knives 6| projecting therefrom. A brace 65 connects the wing i 80 with the member 58, as shown in Figure 2. When this blade assembly is used the plate 42 is used, as shown in Figures 2 and 3 with the knives 6| extending through the slots 43.
The bar 4 carries a stud 62 on which is rotatably mounted a gear 63 to which is attached a crank handle 64, the gear 63 meshing with the gear 33 so that by turning the gears by the handle rotary movement is imparted to the yoke and the blade base 38 so that the base with the blades will rotate.
When the device is to be used the ring I6 is pulled upon so that the feeder mechanism is moved to the rear part of the holder 8 and then the vegetable to be sliced placed in the holder and the ring released so that the plate forces the vegetable against the disk 38. Then by tuming the handle the parts will be rotated so that the blades 54 will cut slices off the vegetable, the rear portions 58 of the blades directing the slices through the openings 40 where they will drop in the chute and thus be discharged into a receptacle placed under the chute to receive them. By adjusting the nut 52 slices of any desired thickness can be produced but when the slices are to be cut into strips the knife assembly having the projecting blades BI is used.
As shown in Figures 14, 15, and 16 the member 25 is hingedly connected to the holder 8 by tongues 26' entering slots 26" in the holder 8, the tongues being bent over as shown in Figure 14.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A slicing machine of the class described comprising a casing having one end open and an opening in its bottom, a chute located in the bottom opening and projecting therefrom, a disk located in the open end of the casing and having openings therein, a yoke connected with the disk and having a tubular stem passing through the closed end of the casing, a knife assembly having a stem passing through the stem of the yoke with its outer end threaded, a nut on said end, whereby turning movement of the nut will adjust the stem of the knife assembly relatively to the stem of the yoke, the knives of the assembly partly projecting through the openings in the disk, a spring for normally pressing the knife assembly toward the disk, means for turning the stem of the yoke, a holder, a spring-pressed plate therein for pressing vegetables in the holder against the knives and means for retracting the plate from underneath the holder.
2. A slicing machine of the class described comprising a casing having one end open and an opening in its bottom, a chute located in the bottom opening and projecting therefrom, a disk located in the open end of the casing and having openings therein, a yoke connected with the disk and having a tubular stem passing through the closed end of the casing, a knife assembly having a stem passing through the stem of the yoke with its outer end threaded, a nut on said end, whereby turning movement of the nut will adjust the stem of the knife assembly relatively to the stem of the yoke, the knives of the assembly partly projecting through the openings in the disk, a spring for normally pressing the knife assembly toward the disk, means for turning the stem of the yoke, a holder, a spring-pressed plate therein for pressing vegetables in the holder against the knives, means for retracting the plate from underneath the holder, and a springpressed member in the holder at one side thereof.
3. A slicing machine of the class described comprising a casing having one end open and an opening in itsbottom, a disk located in the casing between the open end and the bottom opening and having openings therein, a yoke having the extremities of its limbs connected with the disk and having a tubular stem passing through the closed end of the casing, a knife carrier having projections thereon straddling the bight of the yoke and a stem passing through the tubular stem of the yoke, means for adjusting the stem of the carrier longitudinally in the stem of the yoke, such means including spring means tending to press the carrier toward the disk, knives carried by the carrier and projecting through the openings in the disk, means for rotating the stem of the yoke, a centrally arranged shaft projecting from the disk and from that side opposite the side to which the yoke is connected, and a bearing member carried by the casing for the shaft.
