This invention relates to'a device for slicing vegetables and other articles, the general object of the invention being to provide a frusto-conical member rotatably supported in a frame and having slots therein over which are placed the slicing knives, with means for adjusting the knives and the width of the openings to vary the size of the slices being cut from the article.
' Another object of the invention is to provide a hopper which is so arranged as to hold the articles at an inclination so that they will properly engage the knife carrying member and to provide a presser member for pressing the articles against the knife carrying member. a v
A still further object of the invention is to make the parts removable and collapsible so that the device will occupy but little space when stored. 1
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. a

In these drawings, A indicates a supporting frame which comprises the rectangular frame 1 having the cross piece 2 adjacent its rear end, and the yokes 3 whichare pivotally secured to the frame 1 and form the legs of the supporting frame. By pivoting these yokes to the frame 1, they may be folded into alignment with the frame 1 so that the supporting frame will occupy but little space when knocked down. A shaft 4 is j ournaled in the rear part of the frame 1 and in the cross piece 2 and has a crank handle 5 connected with its outer end and a disk 6 connected to its inner end. This disk is formed with openings. The front member of the frame 1 is formed with a bearing notch 7.
A frusto-conical member 8 has its small end closed and its other end open and a spider 9 is connected'to the large end and carries a hub 10 which is formed with a pintle 11 to engage the bearing 7. A latch 12 holds the pintle in the hearing. The small end of the member 8 is detachably connected with the disk by having headed studs 13 thereon engaging keyhole shaped openings (not shown) in the disk, latches 14 being pivoted to the disk to hold the studs in the openings. Thus the member 8 is removably supported in the supporting frame so that it can be replaced by a different form of cutting member when desired. As the means for connecting member 8 with the disk forms a part of myapplication filed February 7,1928, Serial Number 252,599, it is not thought necessary to describe this connection in detail.
The member 8 is formed with the elongated slots 15 and a blade 16 is arranged to overlap each slot and each blade is detachably connected with the member 8 by means of the screws 17. Adjusting screws 18 are also provided for adjusting each blade, these screws passing through threaded holes in the member 8 and engaging the ends of the blades so that by loosening the small screws 17 and tightening the adjusting screws 18, the blades can be adjusted away from the member 8 so that they will make the slices cut from the article being operated upon of greater thickness than they would be if the blades were in contact with the member 8. Thus I have provided means for varying the thickness of the slices cut by the device.
I also provide means for regulating the width of the slots to regulate the thickness of the slices being cut, such means comprising the strips 19, one of. which isiplaceda.
adjacent each slot and each strip is held in place by a screw passing through the outer end of the strip into a threaded hole in the member 19 and by a set of tongues 21 arranged on the inner end of each strip and engaging the inner end wall of the slot, one tonguebeing offset from. the other, as shown in Figure 9, so that the tongues can straddie the wall. inplace, the slots are of less width than they are when the strips are. not used. As shown, the strips are placed on the interior circumference of the member 8, with the blades 16 on the exteriorv circumference.
' A substantially semi-circular cover member 22 1s detachably. connected with the frame 1 b means of ins carried b one end of the cover member engaging holes in the frame 1 and a latch 23 at the other end of the cover member engaging suitable keeper means at the other end of the frame 1 so that by moving the latch to releasing position, the cover member canbe-lifted from the K 3 frame. The latch end of thecover member is provided with a handle 24 for facilitating the handling of. the cover member and this handle can also be used to steady the device when it is in operation. The rear of this cover member is closed and its front is open, This front is provided with a reduced exten sion 25 which is connected with the major portion of a wall 26. A pair of. spaced partitions 27 is placed in the cover member and these partitions and a part of the rear wall thereof form a hopper, the lower edges of. the partitions being so shaped, that the bottom of the hopper is closely aligned with the exterior circumference of the member 8 so that articles placedin thehopper will be engaged by the slicing knivescarried by the member 8. The slicescut from this material will pass through the. slots 15 and dropupon the interior walls of the member 8 and slide down the same and thus pass from the memher into a dish or other receptacle placed under the device to receive the same.
A trough-shaped hopper 28 is detaohably held in the first hopper by means of the pins 29 on its lower end engaging holes formed in the walls. of'the first hopper and the parts are so arranged that the hopper 28 will extend upwardly and rearwardly at an angle, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings. The lower end of the hopper 28 is Thus when these strips arev shaped so that articles placed therein will be engaged by the knives on the member 8. A presser member 30 of considerable weight is slidably arranged in the hopper 28 by having the projections 31 thereon engaging an elongated slot 32 formed in the bottom of the hopper 28, the major portion of the slot being covered by a covering member 33 fastened to the exterior part of the hopper. Pointed projections 34: are carried by the lower end; of the. member 30 for engaging the articles placed in the hopper to hold the articles firmly therein and against the knives and the lower end of the slot 32 is so spaced from the lower end ofthe hopper that downward movement of the member 30 is limited so as to prevent the projections. 34: being struck by the. knives. The slot From the foregoing it will be seen that vegetables or the like, placed in'the hopper 28, will be pressed by the member 30 against the member 8 so, that when said member 8is rotated by the handle, the knives 16.011 said member 8 will cut slices from thearticle in the hopper, these slices dropping into the member 8 and falling from the front end thereof into'the. dish or receptacle placed under the device. As before stated, the thickness of the slices can be varied by adjusting the knives and also by using the strips 19; jltwill, of course, be understood that when desired, the hopper 28 can be removed and the hopper formed by the partitions 27 can be used alone, but thishopper 28 is desirable to use with vegetables of considerable length, such as carrots, beets and the like. The handle 35 is used to raise the member 30 so that the hook can be placed over the upper end of the hopper, while articles are being placed in the hopper and said handle can also be used to apply additional pressure to the ar-' ticles. The supporting frame. can be knocked down and the cover, the hopper and the knife carrying member removed, so that. the device will occupy but little space when not in use. This also enables the parts to be easily cleaned and by making the member 8 removable, a similar member, such as a rater or a member provided with different firms of knives can be substituted therefor.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
It is tobe understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a cover thereon, a hopper carried by the cover, a frusto-conical member rotatably mounted in the frame, a handle for turning the member, said member having slots therein, a knife located adjacent each slot, means for adjusting the knives towards and away from the member to vary the thickness of the slices cut from the articles operated upon, and strips ad- I justably connected with the member for regulating the width of the slots.
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a cover thereon, a hopper carried by the cover, a frusto-conical member rotatably mounted in the frame, a handle for turning the member, said member having slots therein, a knife located adjacent each slot, means for adjusting the knives to vary the thickness of the slices cut from the articles operated upon, and means for regulating the Width of the slots, such means comprising a strip for each slot, means for detachably connecting one end of the strip to the member and tongues on the other end of the strip for straddling an end Wall of the slot.
3. In combination with a vegetable cutter having an upright hopper having holes in its walls, a diagonally arranged trough shaped hopper having its lower end entering the first hopper and pins on said lower end engaging the holes.
