STAMPING-Manner.
i I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 17, 1917.
Application filed October 20, 1916. Serial No. 126,641.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosnrH EDMOND CAYA, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Sorel, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamping-Mallets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention refers to improvements in the apparatus used for dating or canceling stamps respectively for providing a greater number of papers with the same remark, for instance entry stamps in the interior service of a large business. As the use of ordinary stamps with a vertical handle above the stamping head is rather tiresome in case of prolonged application and as it limits the speed of working the same this disadvantage is overcome by my invention, which has the purpose to provide a stamp of the form of a mallet, which may be used with the same speed and ease as an ordinary hammer. Another purpose of my invention is to provide a stamping mallet, which has a stamp for pressing the date or other remarks on the paper to be stamped and which may have also another stamp for canceling or obliterating any remarks. It is further of importance that in my invention the stamp for pressing a date or any other remark on the paper to be stamped is accessible, so as to allow an exchanged text to be printed.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application. Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows my new stamping mallet in perspective;
Fig. 2 shows the head of my stamping mallet with the text printing part in section and the obliterating part in side view; and,
Fig. 3 shows another embodiment of the head of the stamping mallet.
In the shown example the handle 1 of wood, pulp, or the like ends in a shaft 2 of steel, at the point of which is fixed the stamping head 3. This stamping head has 111 the shown example the form of a hollow cube provided with a hinged lid or door 4c,
and which can be closed and locked by means of a lock 5 arranged inside of the cube and a key 6. One of the planes adjacent the plane to which'the shaft 2 is fixed has a projecting annular projection 7, on the face 8 of which the name of the place is cut. The inner cavity of the ring. 7 receives the date and time characters 9, which are exchangeable, and are held rigidly in their proper position by being passed through correspondingholes in the dividing wall 10 of the cube and by the arrangement of larger feet 11 at their inner ends. The stamp characters are forced to the outside by a pad 12 of rubber or any other resilient material, which latter is retained in position by a block 13 of cork or the like, the latter being held by the hinged lid or door 4:. In consequence of this arrangement the types 9 of the changing dates of the particular day and hour can be exchanged in the mallet after temporarily opening the door and removing the block 13 and pad 12.
F ortthe ordinary postal service it is desirable to have at the side of this place and time stamp another stamp for obliterating previously made impressions or stamps attached to an envelop or the like. In such cases I provide at the side of ring 7 another circular projection 14, which may be provided on its face with canceling lines 15 or the like, as is usual in the postal service, while this die 14 is supported by a bracing bracket 16, which connects it with a side wall of the cube 3.
In the postal service as practised in most countries the station collecting the letters may provide a stamp giving the date of collection and another stamp for obliterating the postage stamp; this letter collecting postoflice therefore uses the mallet, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of my drawings. The letter delivering post-office may use a similar mallet, but in cases where the service is simplified a mallet of simplified form such as shown in Fig. 3 may be used, which simplified mallet contains only one stamp giving for instance the name and date of the delivering station.
It is thought that the construction, op-
eration, and use of the invention will be clearf rom thepreceding detailed description.
' Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and, it is meant to include all such within this application wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A stamping mallet comprising a handle,'a hollow head having a hinged top carried by the handle, means for locking the hinged top in closed position, printing members insertible through one side of the head to project through its opposite wall and cushion arranged between the printing membersand the hinged top.
2. A stamping mallet comprising a han- "dle,' a hollow open ended head carried by the handle and provided with openings in one wall, a lockable cover for the head,
printing members disposed through the openings in the head and a cushion interposed in the head between the printing members and the cover.
3. A stamping mallet comprising a bandle, a hollow open ended head carried by the handle and provided with openings in one wall, a lockable cover for the head, printing members disposed through the openings in the head and a resilient body disposed in the head and arranged to be held in position when the cover is locked.
4. A stamping mallet comprising a handle, a hollow open ended head carried By the handle and provided with openings in one wall, a lockable cover for the head, printing members disposed through the openings in the head and a body of rubber and cork disposed in the head and arranged to be held in position when the cover is in locked position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
