Description
M. P. NORTON. HAND STAMP.
N0. 106,716. Patented A112. 23, 1870.
UNITED STATES MARCUS P. NORTON, OE TROY, NEW YORK, AssioNoR To HELEN ,M.
INGALLs, on
PATENT OFFICE.
SAME PLACE.
IMPRVEMENT IN HAND-STAMPS.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.'l06,7l6, dated August 23, 1570.
To 'wl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARCUS P. NORTON, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have heretofore invented certain new and useful improvements in a device or instrument for printing, dating, and canceling internal-revenue or other stamps of value by cut-ting or puncturing the same in the manner and by the means substantially as herein described; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construetion, and operation 'of the said invention.
Like letters represent and refer to like or corresponding parts upon the accompanying drawings, made in one sheet.
Figure l is a vertical section on a line through the center of my canceling device or instrument. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of same device or instrument. .'Fig. 3 is a face view, showing the printing and cutting or puncturing devices arranged and combined for printing any name and the date, and for cancellation purposes. Fig. 4 is a modifiea--` tion representing the invention attached to an ordinary stationary frame to.- receive and con tain such printing, dating, and cut-ti n g or puncturing devices. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged View or plan of cancellation and printing and dating an'internal-revenue stamp represented by said gure. revenue stamp canceled by being eut in sev eral places, together with the month,'day of month, and the year; also the name and residence of the person printed or impressed upon the surface of such revenue-stampwho performs the operation of cancellation.
The nature of my invention and improve` ments consists in the employment of cutters or knives between the type for the month, the day of the month, and the year.
A, Figs. l, 2, and 3, shows a device or instrument for printing or impressing the name of any bank, corporation, company, or person, and the month, the day of the month, and the vear upon the government revenue-stamp, and at the same time Iand operation of the insi rument cancel such stamp and the check, note, draft, receipt, or other paper on which .such stamp may have been secured or aXed Fig. 6 represents an internal! in the usual manner, by cutting or puncturing the said revenue-stamp, and also cut-ting through both the stamp and paper or document on which the same shall have been used or affixed, by means of the cutting devices c, or knives constructed in any suitable and desirable form or shape, and arranged and combined for that purpose as herein stated. The said knives or cutters ar are placed between and alternate with the type for the month, the day of the month, and year, as shown, both between and outside of the said type for the date, and they are each properly adjusted to the face of the dating-type or printing-sur- 'face of the device or instrument in which they are placed, arranged, combined, and firmly held or secured therein by means of a suitable. screw-bolt, c, or by othersuitable and convenient means.
At Figs. l and 3, d is t-he type for the month, c is the type for the day of the month, and f is the type for the year. The cutters or knives may be seen at u, same figures, which may `reach have upon the cutting or puncturing edge any form, shape, or configuration in or with which it is desirable to cancel 'the reve nue-stamp.
The said cutting and puncturing canceling device should be made detachable for the pur pose of repairs or supplying new ones when needed. \Vhen the revenuestamp shall have been canceled by the use of my said invention and device, it will be cut or punctured, and the date thereof printed or impressed thereon, substantially as shown in accompanying drawings, cutting through the stamp and the paper to which it is affixed in the usual manner. Such cancellation is permanent, and will prevent a second or reuse of the rev enne-stamp. The blow is' given by the instrument or device upon the exposed surface of the revenue-stamp, and the date is thereby given thereon, and at the sameitime the revenue-stamp is cut or punctured in such form and in as many places as desirable.
Having thus described the nature, constuction, and operation of my said instrument or device, what I claim, and desire to secure by the Letters Patent of the United States of The arangement of the knives or Cutting day of June, 1870, hereto set my hand in the devices a., when used alternately with the type l presence of two Witnesses.
for forming or printing the month, the day of T `T the-month, and the year,in the manner and MARCUS P' AORTOA' for the purposes substantially as herein de- Witnesses: scribed :md set forth. GHARLEs P. BARNARD,
In testimony whereof I have on this 12th FREDRICK KooNs.
