AN DREW BLRANAM, PMDTWUTHO-WASH INI'UNJ UNITED STATESA PATENT Enrono STEPHEN MOORE, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
OFFERTORY-CALEN DAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,996, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed February 16, 1895. Serial No. 538 ,666. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Offertory-Oalendars,
' of which the following is a specification, refsome act to be done at the time noted on the detachable piece and comprising a backing which is uncovered as each slip or piece is detached and which serves as a record of the fact that said act has been done.
My invention is fully set forth in the following description, and the novel features thereof are pointed out and clearly defined in the claim at the end of thisspecification.
In the drawing I have shown a front view of a calendar embodying my invention.
It has been found desirable in Sundayschools and the like, where contributions of money are to be made from individual scholars or members, to provide some plan or means which will serve as a reminder of the amount which each is to contribute and of the time at which each contribution is to be made. It is further desirable that the device used for this purpose should serve as a record of the contributions which have already been made during a `specified time.
A device of the kindreferred to having the advantages stated is furnished by the employment of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, A is a card at the top of which is preferably a suspendingeye B, which may be of any well-known form, or the card may be suspended by means of a hole cut in the top thereof. The face of the card may be ornamented as desired, and any appropriate words may be printed thereon or otherwise affixed thereto.
'The card -A is preferably divided about equally, one portion thereof, preferably the upper portion, being devoted to a certificate expressed in any appropriate Words, indicating that the party whose name is found therein contain also other'statements, as that the v party named therein is a member Aof some society or the like, or the certificate may be varied so as to embrace matter additional to the above or wholly different matter. The other portion of the card contains a calendar for a given period of time. In the card illustrated in the drawing the calendar is for one year and notesonly the months of the year. The name of each month is noted upon a portion of the card which is separated by perforations or by a combination of perforations and cuts from the adjoining portions of the card. The slips or portions 3 of the card for each month are arranged preferably as shown, six on one side and six at the opposite side of the card. In the drawing the slips are wholly separated from each other and from the adjoining portion of the card by. cuts,
vwhich are indicated by full lines, and each slip is attached to the cards at the perforated lines 2. of the slips to be turned up without being detached from the card to disclose the inscriptions on the backing-sheet, which inscriptions are of a character to induce the subscriptions called for by the slips. Each of the slips 3 may be appropriately marked to indicate that when it is detached it is to be handed to the treasurer or other party receiving the contributions with the amount of the contribution. In this way the treasurer or party receiving the contribution has a record, if he wishes to ypreserve it, of the period of time to which the contribution applies and of the contributions which have been previously handed in from any individual giver.
On the back of the card A, behind that portion thereof which is occupied by the slips 3, is pasted or otherwise secured a backing of paper or other suitable material, which is preferably colored differently from the face of the card A and the faces of the slips Upon this backing and directly behind each slip may be printed any suitable inscription. In the drawing the shaded space 4 represents the backing of another color, the slip 3 which belongs in front of the said portion of the backing being removed. The slip 3 which This construction enables any or all IOO only.
has been removed, as Will be clear, is the slip for January. By this means the party contributing may by a glance at the card tell how many contributions he has made for the year and when his next contribution is due, While at the same time the card and its backing furnish an opportunityto keep before the contributor a suggestion of the benefits to himself or to others to be derived from contributing, and thus the contributor may be induced to continue his contributions and to make them promptly.
It Will be obvious that the slips may be varied in number to correspond with the offerings which are to be made during a given period of time. In the calendar illustrated twelve slips are shown, one for each month of the year, but instead one might be provided for each Week, making fifty-two for the year, or the slips might be reduced in number and one provided for each quarter-year It will also be obvious that each slip,
as also the card to which the slip is attached, may be marked With acommon mark-as, for example, a number-so that at any time after the slips are detached the card from which each slip is taken may be readily determined by reference to said number. In the drawing the common designating-number employed is 20. It will also be obvious that the certificate portion of the card may be omitted Without departing from my invention.
Vhat I claim isy An offertory-calendar comprising a card a portion of which is cut and perforated to form one or more vertical series of slips, each of said slips being partially connected with the card along one side and entirely separated from each other and from the card along its other three sides and adapted to exhibit printed statements, and a sheet secured to the back of the card and extending across the space occupied by the slips and bearing suitable inscriptions, the said construction providing for the removal of any one or more of the slips and disclosing the inscriptions on the backing-sheet Without disturbing the ad jacent slips.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
