Description

emi effet @Imanes E. DONNELLAN, or INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
` Y I Letters lnatent No. 109,302, dated November 15, 1870.`
IMPROVEMENT IN CANCELlNG-STAMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters lratent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L-OHARLns E. DONNELLAN, of
Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp for Canceling Postage-Stamps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing andto the letters of reference marked thereon making apart ot' this specifi- Y cation.- ,I
The nature ot' my invention consists in the con struction of a stamp for canceling postage-stamps, us will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilledin the art to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, iuwhich Figure lis a plan view; and
Figure 2, a side View of my improved stamp.
A represents the stamp, made of any suituble material, and about the size of a Vcommon letter envelope. l
In the center of the upper side of this stamp is the Vusual post-ndice stamp, B, denoting the name of the post office and the date.
From this post-office stamp any desired number of lines, a, (t, radiates, as shown in fig. 1, so as to cover the entiresurface of the envelope. These lines are fine enough so as not to deface any of the writing on the envelope, but still suiioiently distinct to cancel the postage-stamp wherever the same may be placed.y
This entire stamp may be used in various ways.
For instance, by hand, in the same manner as theusual hand-stamp; or it may be used in a machine like a printing-press, the stamp moving to and from the letter; or the stamp may be on a revolving roller, the letters being f'ed to the' machine in rapid succession. v
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi A stamp for canceling postage-stamps, having a series of lines radiating from the, postoce stamp, .ind covering the entire, or almost the entire, surface of the envelope, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of July, 1870.
CHARLES E. DONNELLAN.
