Description

FFICE.
'WILLIAM L. BALOH, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. GOLDING AND ED- WARD H. DENNISON, OF CHELSEA7 MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,182, dated August 22, 1871 antedatcd August 18, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WrLLrAM L. BALcH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State or' Massachusetts, have invented a neuT and Improved Printing-Press, of which the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specifica-tion, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said iinprovements, by. which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such part-s as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The present invention relates to a press for printing cards and paper sheets, and designed princil'xally for the use of amateur printers; the object of the invention being to accomplish the inkin g of the types and the printing of the sheet in a simpler and more complete `manner than is done by any press of a similar class.
rIlhe accompanying drawing is a side elevation ot' my press, in which A represents the type-bed, which is inclined backward to prevent the types from falling out of place; B, the platen, on which the sheet to be printed is placed; U, the gripers, by which the sheet is held in position while being printed; D, the inkingrollcr, and E the rotating table, on which the ink is spread.
The pressure necessary to effect the printing of the sheet is applied to the frame of the platen B, at a point below and to the rear of its turning point, by means ofthe compound lever F G, which is operated by a handle or treadle, as may be desired, the handle-forni being shown in my drawing. The inking of the type is accomplished by the passage ofthe inkingroller over the ink table and then over the face ofthe form, motion being given to the frame H carrying the roller through the arm I, which so connects the frame H with the impression-lever F Gr as to cause the inking-roller D to pass over the face of the type at the proper time. The sheet is held firmly to the platen B While being printed by the gripers C, whose action is controlled by the curved rod K passing through a socket, L, aiiixed to the frame oi the press, and bent to such a form as to cause the gripers to grasp and relieve the sheet at the proper moment. Y
I claim as my invention- Actuating both the platen and the ink-roller frame from lever M by means of links I G, coinbined substantially in the manner described.
XVM. LL BALCII.
