UNITED STATES v Prion.
ATENT TYPE=WRITING-MACHINE PLATEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,099, dated December 28, 1897. Application filed April 5, 1894. Serial No. 506,404. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, i2 may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORATIO G. WOOD, of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new WVriting Machines, of which the following is This invention relates to the type-impression rollers of type-writing machines, and has for its object to provide a device of this char acter in which the noise caused by contact of the type-hammers with the roller may be deadened or even entirely removed and by which it may also be possible to provide a partiallyyielding surface to the type-hammers to prevent the tearing or cutting into the paper by the hammers, a further object of the invention being to provide such a roller as may be both serviceable and durable and at the same time light of weight.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roller embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partially cut of. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line 00 at, Fig. 2.
In the practice of myinvention I form a hollow cylindrical body A of slightly less than the usual diameter, and which cylinder I fill almost to the mouth at each end with a plaster-of-paris core B. Within the cylinder at each end Isecure plugs 0, having spindles D formed thereon, which said spindles serve as journals for the roller.
Upon the outside of the cylinder A, I secure a covering E of felt or similar flexible material, and over this covering E, I tightly secure an outer casing F, which is of rubber, preferably semi-elasticsuch as, for example, the rubber cloth used for blankets.
I prefer to form the cylinder A of aluminium in order that the roller may be extremely light for convenience where used upon such, machines as require constant lifting of the carriage.
The felt and rubber coverings deaden the sound of the type-hammers which strike the roller as the machine is operated, and the rubber covering serves also to prevent the digging of the type-faces into the paper upon the roller by providing a partially-elastic surface to receive the blows ofthe type-hammers.
The plaster-of-paris core prevents any vibratory sound which might be present were the roller absolutely hollow. Itwill be understood, however, that any other suitable composition may be employed instead of the plaster-of-paris.
I do not confine myself to the exact form, material, and details of construction herein set forth, as the same maybe changed or varied at pleasure.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A platen for type-writing machines consisti'ng of a hollow core, provided interiorly with a sound-deadening filling, and a sheath or covering.
2. A platen for type-writing machines consisting of a hollow core, provided interiorly and exteriorly with sound-deadening fillings, and a sheath or covering.
3. An impression-roller for type-writing machines consisting of a hollow cylinder having a plaster-of-paris core therein, and a felt covering thereon, and a semi-elastic outer casing, substantially as shown and described.
4. An impression-roller for type-writing machines consisting of a hollow aluminium cylinder having a plaster-of-paris core and a felt covering thereon, and an outer casing of rubber cloth, substantially as shown and described.
5. A platen for a type-writing machine, consisting. of an interior core, a sheath or cover, and a sound-deadening filling intermediate the core and the sheath or cover and in contact with both.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of two witnesses, this 31st day of March,
HORATIO G. WOOD. Witnesses:
BENJAMIN MARSH, 2d, 0. MELVILLE.
