Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. THORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Store-Front Constructions, of which the following is a specification.

Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a setting for a store-front-glass, the outer member of which setting can be locked in position from the inner side of the glass.

Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in perspective, partly broken away and partly in section, of a portion of a store-front construction embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of a piece of the outer bar.

Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of a piece of the combined inner bar and base-plate.

Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of one of the anchor-blocks.

Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of one of the clamping-bolts for holding the outer bar against the glass.

Fig. 6 is a view in perspective of the nut for drawing up said clamping-bolt.

Fig. 7 is a vertical cross-section taken through the construction shown in Fig. 1 on a vertical plane between neighboring clamping-bolts.

Fig. 8 is a similar cross-section on substantially the vertical plane of one of the clamping-bolts.

Fig. 9 is a view in perspective of the lock-nut.

Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is a window-casing upon which is fixedly mounted a base-plate, 2, and an inner bar, 3, which are preferably integrally connected by means of a back-plate, 4, and gutter, 5, said back-plate being secured to a vertical part of the casing.

The inner bar, 3, is adapted to engage the inner side of a plate of glass, 6, which rests upon suitable underlying supports.

The glass is clamped and held between the lnner bar, 3, and an outer bar, 7, which outer bar has along its outer edge an inturned flange, 8, which underlies the outer edge of the base-plate, 2, the latter being upwardly offset to receive beneath it said flange, 8.

The outer bar, 7 has along its inner edge an inturned vertical flange, 9, which extends downward beyond the edge of the glass and is provided with openings in the form of open slots 24: located at suitable intervals, adapted to receive screw-bolts, 10, the heads of which engage the outer side of the flange, 9.

These screw-bolts, 10, pass beneath the plate of glass and their screw-threaded inner ends are severally engaged by nuts, 12, each rotatively mounted in an anchorblock, 18, secured in fixed relation to the casing by screws, l-l.

The anchor-block, 13, is provided with a transverse channel, 15, which freely receives the screw-threaded portion of the screwbolt and closely receives and fits a rectangular portion, 16, of the shank of the screwbolt thereby preventing the screw-bolt from rotating.

The anchor-block is also provided with a longitudinal slot, 17, intersecting at right angles the channel, 15, and adapted to freely receive the nut, 12, whereby said nut is held against longitudinal movement upon the screw-bolt while being permitted to freely rotate thereupon.

The nut, 12, is provided with peripheral openings, 18, adapted to receive an operating wrench or pin, whereby the nut can be rotated.

This cap, 21, thus forms a cover which excludes dirt from the opening in the gutter through which the nut projects, and also serves as a lock-nut to prevent accidental displacement of the nut, 12.

In setting up the construction, the com bincd base-plate, 2, gutter, 5, and inner bar, 3, are mounted upon the casing and the anchor-blocks, 13, are then mounted upon the base-plate at the proper intervals, and the parts so mounted are secured by screws firmly to the window-casing.

The glass is then set in from the outside upon the anchor-blocks, or other supports provided for it, and in engagement with the inner bar, 3, which bears against the inher side of the glass.

Thescrew-bolts and nuts are placed in the respective anchor-plates with the bolts pro- 'ecting outwardly beneath, and somewhat beyond the outer side of, the plate of glass, and the outer bar, 7 is then placed in position from the outside by sliding the slotted portions of its inner flange, 9, down over the shanks of the screw-bolts and then forcing its bottom flange, 8, beneath the outer edge of the baseplate, 2, the screw-bolts being loosened sufiiciently to permit this.

.The screw-bolts are then drawn inward by rotating the respective nuts, 18, from inside the window until the outer bar is brought into proper engagement with the outer side of the plate of glass. 7

If desired, the cap, 21, may be permanently riveted upon the gutter and provided with a slot, 25, to afford access to the nut for operating the nut Without removing the cap, the screw, 22, being removed for adjustment of the nut and replaced to lock the nut in adjusted position.

lmiat I claim as new and desire to secure 7 by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with a window-casing; and a plate of glass; of an anchor-block in fixed relation to the casing; a channeled inner bar engageable with the inner side of the glass and provided with an aperture in the bottom of its channel; an outer bar engageable with the outer side of the glass; and complementary screw-members extending transversely of the glass, one rotatively mounted in said anchor-block accessible from the inner side of the glass through the aperture in the bottom of said channel, and the other connected with said outer bar, said screw-members being independent of said channeled inner bar.

2. The combination with a window-casing; and a plate of glass; of an anchor-block in fixed relation to the casing, said anchorwith the inner side of the glass and permitting access to said nut. V

3. The combination with a window-casing; and a plate of glass; of a combined base-plate-inner-bar-and-gutter, said gutter being provided with an opening and said inner bar being engageable with the inner side of the glass; an anchor-block mounted upon said base-plate beneath said gutter, said an chor-block being provided with a channel angular in cross-section extending transversely of the glass andwith' a slot inter seating said channeliopposite said opening in the gutter; an outer bar engageable with the outer side of the glass; means for securing said anchor-block and" said combined base-plate-inner-bar-and-gutter to the easing; a screw-bolt occupying said channel-in connection with 'said outer bar and having an angular portion closely fitting said channel; and a nut occupying said slot in the anchor-block in engagement with said screwbolt and projecting upwardly through said opening in the'gutter.

4. The combination with a window-casing; and a plate of glass; of a combined base-plate-inner-bar-and-gutter, said gutter being provided with an opening and said .inner bar beingengageable with the inner side of the glass; an anchor-block mounted upon said base-plate beneath said gutter, said anchor-block being provided with a channel angular in cross-section extending transversely of the glass and with a slot intersecting said channel opposite said open- 1 ing in the gutter; an outer bar engageable with the outer side of the glass, said outer bar having along itstinner edge an inturned notched flange extending beyond the edge of the glass, and along its outer edge an in.- turned flange underlying the outer edge of said base-plateg means for securing said anchor-block, and said combined base-plate-in ner-bar-andgutter to the casing; a screwbolt engaging said notched flange on the outer bar and occupying said channel and having an angular portion closely fitting therein; and a nut occupying said slot inthe anchor-block in engagement with said screwbolt and projecting upwardly through said opening in the gutter.-

5.
