Be it known that 1, PAUL K. MAonUnnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Lock-Escutcheon, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved construction of lock escutcheon.

Ordinarily, in applying a lock to a door, it is necessary to mortise the door to receive the lock by cutting in from the edge of the door but this takes considerable time and must be done by an experienced workman as otherwise the appearance of the door will be ruined.

ft is therefore the object of the present invention to provide a lock escutcheon of such construction as to permit of its ready application to a door by an inexperienced person and also to insure of rigid mounting ot the lock casing.

The lock escutcheon embodying the pres eut invention is designed to be so assembled with a lock, and the escutcheon is of such construction, as to permit of the bolt of the lock being readily reversed whereby the lock and escutcheon may be applied to a door )ening either to the right or the left.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a lock escutcheon embodying the present invention applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a vertical seo tional view through the door showing the escutcheon and the lock casing supported thereby in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the escutcheon, a portion of the door, and the lock casing and illustrating a reversible bolt within the easing.

In the drawings, the door is indicated by the numeral 5 and in applying the lock escutcheon and lock to the door, the free edge of the door is out in, as for example with a saw, to atlord a lock casing receiving recess 6. in so cutting the door to receive the casing, parallel incisions are made extending inwardly from the said free edge of the door and the material of the door between these incisions is then broken away to afford the recess 6. It will be appreciated that this method of preparing the door to receive the lock casing is much simpler than the ordinary method of mortising the door from the edge only and that skill in carpentry is not required to be exercised in so preparing the door.

The lock is indicated in the drawings by the numeral 7 and has mounted therein the usual reversible latch bolt 8 and also has mounted therein the usual knob spindle 9 through the rotation of which the said latch bolt is retracted.

The escutcheon embodying the present invention consists of an escutcheon plate 10 which is of any desired outline or configuration and is formed at. one vertical edge with a right angularly projecting integral web 11, the plate 10 being disposed against one face of the door 5 with the web 11 bearing or resting against the free edge of the door and being secured in this position through the medium of suitable screws or other tastening devices 12 which are inserted through the plate 10 and the web 12. The escutcheon embodying the invention also includes an escutcheon plate 13 which is separate from the plate 10 and its web 11 but is adapted to be disposed with one vertical edge in registration with the tree vertical edge of the said web 1.1 as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 ot' the drawings, it being held in this position through the medium of suitable screws 1 1 engaged therethrough and in the material of the door.

It will be readily understood from the foregoing that when the escutcheon, comprised of the plates 10 and 13 and the web 11, is in proper position upon the door, the lock casing receiving recess 6 will be entirely concealed.

In carrying out the invention, the lock casing 7 is supported between the escutcheon plates 10 and 1S and by the said plate 19, suitable brackets being employed for this purpose. Each of the brackets just mentioned consists of a strip 15 secured to the lock casing, upon one side thereof, and bent at its ends to extend at right angles from the said side of the casing as at 16 and then laterally at right angles as at 17 to afford portions which are secured to the respective plates 10 and 13. That side or wall of the lock casing 7 to which is secured the bracket which supports the escutcheon plate 13 is in the nature of a removable face plate so that by removing first this escutcheon plate 13 and then the face plate of the lock casing, the latch bolt 8 may be thus exposed so as to permit of its being reversed, whereby the lock may be arranged for use upon a door opening either to the right or to the left. 1 carried by The escutcheon plates 10 and 13 are of course formed with the usual openings for the passage of the door knob spindle and for the insertion of the key for the lock 7 and as heretofore stated, these two plates may be of any desired outline or design. The web 11 of the esoutcheon is formed with an opening 18 to receive the head of the latch bolt 8 and is formed also with a slot 19 through which maybe projected the head of the locking bolt of the lock, this head being indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings by the numeral 20.

What is claimed is 1. In a lock escutcheon, an escutcheon plate, a web integral with the plate, a lock casing supported from the said plate, and an escutcheon plate supported by the lock casing.

2. In a lock escutcheon, an escutcheon plate, a web integral with the plate, a bracket the said plate, a lock casing sup ported by the bracket, and an escutcheon plate removably supported upon the lock casing.

3. In a lock escutcheon, in combination, an escutcheon plate, a lock casing, a bracket connecting the casing and escutcheon plate,

and supporting the casing upon the plate in spaced relation with respect thereto, said lock casing having a removable face plate, a second escutcheon plate, and a bracket supporting the last mentioned escutcheon plate from and in spaced relation with re spect to the face plate of the lock casing.
