Description

T. F. BARNETT.
BUCKET.
APPLICATION FILED IAN. 1a, 1916.

@TE I, 1
L FEICE,
THOMAS E. BARNETT, OF LEVVISBURG, TENNESSEE.
BUCKET.
Application filed January 18, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewisburg, in the county of Marshall and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
Referring now to the drawings, which are merely illustrative of my invention,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a portion of the top of a bucket showing my reinforcing system applied.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the reinforcing member.
Referring further to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the respective views, ldesignates the side or body portion of a sheet metal bucket having a roll rim;5 incasing a steel wire 6, said roll rim being cut away a certain distance at oppositely disposed points thereon, and said steel wire being bent upwardly in a curve to form an eye 7 for the handle 8 of the bucket, one each of said eyes being formed within the cut-away portions of the roll rim of said body portion.
A reinforcing member 9, consisting preferably of a circular blank of sheet metal formed with an oval perforation 1O centrally thereof, is placed upon the rim of the bucket in such position that the eye will project through said oval perforation 10. The
sides of the blank, oppositely disposed with respect to said eye 7, are then bent downwardly and inwardly to a position superposed upon the inside and outside, respectively, of the side wall of the bucket, to which it is secured by means of rivets 11.
I/Vhile the roll rim of the top of the bucket incasing the steel wire would afford a cer- Specification of Letters Patent.

tain limited strength thereto, still experience has demonstrated that long use or much weight in the bucket will cause the steel wire to tear away the roll rim retaining it. My reinforcing member is designed to and does overcome the tendency of the eye to pull out of its normal and proper position, the pull upon the eye being directed to the reinforcing member and the rivet securing the same.
The utility, adaptability, and advantages of my improved form of bucket being obvious, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.
Having now described and pointed out the new and useful features of my invention I do not limit myself to the shape of certain parts where the shape is not essential, nor do I restrictmyself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but mean and intend to claim all equivalents and variations thereof, not departing in principle from my invention, and falling within the purview of the appended claim.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A sheet metal bucket comprising a body portion, a reinforcing wire member, a rolled rim on the upper edge of the body inoasing the wire member, said rim having cut away portions at diametric opposite points, metal disks having an oval opening therein, the disk member being adapted to straddle the upper edge of the bucket, the loop portions of the wire member projecting through the said openings and the sides of the disks be ing bent into engagement with the sides of the said bucket and riveted thereto, and
said loop adapted to be engaged by the free ends of a handle member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
THOMAS F. BARNETT.
