Description

W. Hwy 757772557 L a 2 5% I 1719/2320. PM; fez/12272.30, A955;
AM- PHOTO-THO. 00. NY. (OSBORNE'S PROCESS) UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. MCNAMEE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOCKING-SPINDLE DOOR-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,320, dated anuary 30, 1 855.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, WM. H. MCNAMEE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Locking-Spindle Latches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speci fication, in which Letter A is the form of latch, having a ball 01 upon one end and a hammer b With an upright stem inclosed in a spiral wire upon the other end.
Letter B is a face plate having an opening 0 made in it to admit the hammer b of the latch to work in when applied upon the door. On the inner side of said face plate is a shelf piece d having through it a hole for the upright stem on the latch to Work in.
Letter C is a spindle made Wide between the ends, in that part that comes within the thickness of the door.
Letter 6 is a projecting arm on the spindle CZ Letter D is a fork shaped bolt.
Letter E is a knob escutcheon, having on its inner side and circumference a rim f and on each side, i. 6., above and below the hole fo-r'the spindle two guide pieces g.
The horizontal dotted lines denote the bored hole in the edge of the door.
The operation of said latch A is byinserting it in the bored hole. The bored hole being of the diameter of the ball a upon the latch. The hole being any depth, but sufficiently deep, leaving the end b a hammer of the latch protruding from the hole to make a catch. The face plate is let in flush on the edge of the door, passing the hammer 6 through the hole 0 and the upright stem upon the hammer, through the hole in the shelf piece 01. The spiral Wire pressing against the shelf piece, and upon the hammer offers a resistance to the raising of the latch, and thereby secures the latch in fastening. The spindle C being moved by knobs attached to them perform a rocking motion, and the said widened part of the spindle being placed immediately under and across the latch, by this motion presses the latch upward, z'. c. in that part that is free, the end a of thelatch being confined in a hole as described. The projecting arm 6 on the spindle rests against the side of the door. The fork part of the bolt D being across the arm. The handle or arm of the bolt being secured by a hole in the escutcheon rim. The escutcheon being screwed upon the door, performs in'locking the spindle.
Having described said latch with the im-- provements thereto what I claim and Wish to secure by Letters Patent is, viz
The guides g and the rim f of the escutcheon. The shelf d on the face plate, and the upright stem inclosed with a spiral Wire working through the shelf piece, 03. The projecting arm e on the spindle, and the forked bolt D. The whole combined for thepurpose of a latch and look as herein described.
Philadelphia, December 26, 1854.
WM. H. MONAMEE.
