To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER J. Hown, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Foreparts for Boot and Shoe Trees, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shoe tree forepart which is obliquely divided to form a body member and a movable member, said members having flat complemental inner faces, the inner face of the movable member being in sliding contact with the inner face of the body member so that, when the movable member is moved forward, the width of the forepart is reduced.
The invention has for its object to provide improved means for connecting the body member and the movable member in such manner as to securely support the movable member against tipping or rocking movements in any direction, not only when it is in its operative position with the forepart at its maximum width, but also when it is moved forward to reduce the width of the forepart.
The invention is embodied in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the wings hereinafter referred to.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings,12 represents the body member and 13 the movable member of an obliquely divided tree forepart, the member 12 having a flat oblique inner face 12 while the member 13 has a complemental flat oblique inner face 13*. The arrangement of said faces is such that, when the movable member is in the position shown by full lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the forepart has its operative h, and, en, th t fi ehleti her is moved forward as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and by full lines in Fig. 4, the width of the forepart is decreased, all as by Letters Patent No. 610,235, granted to me September 6, 1898.
The present invention relates to the means for connecting the members 12 and 13, said means being of such nature that the member 13 is firmly supported against rocking or tipping movements in all of the positions it is capable of occupying.
In carrying out my invention, I form in the body member 12 an elongated slot 14 extending substantially parallel with the bottom face of the foot, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, said slot opening on the face 12. In the movable member 13 1 form a simila rslot 15, which, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, is parallel with and in a dif ferent plane from the slot 14.
16 and 17 represent oblong flat-sided metal wings. each formed to enter and have a close fit on the sides of one of said elongated slots and each considerably shorter than the slot which it enters. The wing 16 is firmly attached to the body member 12 and enters the slot in the movable member 13, as shown by Figs. '3 and 4, said wing being immovable relatively to the body member and constituting a ,uide on which the movable member is slidable.
The wing 17 is firmly attached to the movable member and projects into the slot 14 of the body member, said wing constituting a slide which moves with the body member and is guided by the slot 14. I prefer to secure the wings 16 and 17 to the body member and movable member, respectively, by the means next described.
The wing '16 is provided with an ear 16 projecting into a socket 18 formed for its reception in the body member, said socket coinciding with the slot 15, the ear 16 being attached to the body member by a pin 19 driven into the body member and through a hole in said ear.
The wing 17 is provided with an ear 17 entering a socket 20 formed for its reception in the movable member, said socket coinciding with the slot 14, the ear 1'? being secured to the movable member by a pin 21 driven into the movable member and into a hole formed. in the car 17*.
I have provided means for preventing the withdrawal of the .wings from the slots which they enter, said mea s eing preferably embodied in a pin 22 driven into the movable member and through a slot 23 in the wing 16, and a pin 24 driven into the body member and through a slot 25 in the wing 17. The said slots permit the described movements of the movable member 13, and incidentally cooperate with the pins 22 and 241 in limiting said movements.
It will be seen by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, that the slots 14 and 15 and the wings 16 and 17, are out of transverse alinement with each other, so that said wings and the sides of the slots cooperate in forming an elongated two-part sliding connection between the body member and the movable member. One part of said connection comprises the wing 17 and the sides of the slot 14, while the other part comprises the Wing 16 and the sides of the slot 15. Said twopart sliding connection is adapted to pre vent the movable member from tipping or rocking, when in any position to which it may be moved, one part of said connection being relatively near the toe end and the other relatively near the rear end of the forepart.
It will be now seen that the oblong wings closely fitting the elongated slots, one wing and slot being in a different plane from the other wing and slot, prevent the movable member 13 from tipping or rocking when in any position to which it is movable.
I claim:
1. A tree foot forepart, comprising a body member having a flat oblique inner face, a movable member having a flat oblique inner face adapted to slide on the inner face of the body member to vary the width of said forepart, the said members being provided with elongated parallel slots arranged in different planes and opening on said faces, a pair of flat-sided oblong wings, one attached to the body member and constituting a guide entering the slot of the movable member, and the other attached to the movable member and constituting a slide entering the slot of the body member, said wings being shorter than said slots and permitting longitudinal movements of the movable member, and" means for preventing withdrawal of the wings from the slots, the said slots and wings being out of transverse alinement with each other, so that said wings and sides of the slots cooperate in forming an elongated two-part sliding connection between the body and movable'members, adapted to prevent the movable member from tipping or rocking when in any position to which it may be moved, one part of said connection being relatively near the toe end, and the other relatively near the rear end of the forepart.
2. A tree foot forepart, comprising a body member having a flat oblique inner face, a movable member having a flat oblique inner face adapted to slide on the inner face of the body member to vary the width of said forepart, the said members being provided with elongated parallel slots arranged in different planes and opening on said faces, and with sockets also arranged in different planes and opening on said faces, the socket of each member coinciding with the slot of the other member, a pair of flat sided wings each having a shank secured in one of said sockets, one wing constituting a guide entering the slotof the movable mem her, and theother wing constituting a slide entering the slot of the body member, and means for preventing withdrawal of the wings from the slots, the said slots and Wings being out of transverse alinement with each other, so that said wings and the sides of the slots cooperate in forming an elongated two-part sliding connection between the body and movable members, adapted to prevent the movable member from tipping or rocking when in any position to which it may be moved, one part of said connection being relatively near the toe end, and the other relatively near the rear end of the forepart. A tree foot forepart, comprising abody memberhaving a flat oblique inner face, a movable member having a flat oblique inner face adapted to slide on the inner face of the body member to vary the width of said forepart, the said members being provided with elongated parallel slots arranged in different planes and opening on saic faces, and a pair of fiat-sided oblong wings, one attached to the body member and constituting a guide entering the slot of the movable member, and the other attached to the movable member and constituting a slide entering the slot of the body member, said wings being provided with longitudinal slots and the said members being provided with pins extending through said slots and preventing withdrawal of the ears from the slots, the said slots and wings being out of transversealinement with each other, so that said wings and the sides of the slots cooperate in forming an elongated two-part sliding connection between the body and movable members, adapted to prevent the movable member from tipping or rocking when in any position to which it may be moved, one part of said connection being relatively near the toe end, and the other relatively near the rear end of the forepart.
