JOHN S. HANSEN, 0F BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIG-NOR TO 0. A. MILLER TREEING- MACHINE COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE. I
SHOE-TREE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN S. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvemelits in Shoe-Trees, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to improvements in shoe trees, lasts, and similar devices.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the fore part and the heel part are connected for movements toward and from each other by two movably connected members, and where such connection comprises an improved arrangement of parts which will be simple in construction, easy of operation, and capable of adjustment in such manner as to effectively maintain the connecting members in position while in the shoe.
WVith this object in view, the invention contemplates the provision of means permitting relative longitudinal, as well as pivotal movements, of the two members connecting the fore part with the heel part, together with devices for holding the members against relative longitudinal movements when adjusted properly for a given length of shoe, and locking means for such devices which is rendered effective when the members are extended to position the tree properly in a shoe, but is rendered inefiective when said members are retracted to remove the tree from a shoe. Preferably, the ole vices for holding the members in adjusted position comprise a series of ratchet teeth, formed on or carried by one of the connecting. members, and a pawl supported by a part which is in sliding engagement with said member and is pivotally connected with the other-member, the pawl being arranged to engage with the ratchet teeth. Preferably, also, the locking means referred to comprises a portion of the pivotally connected member which extends beyond. its pivot and beneath the rear end of the pawl, and is so formed that it will permit such end of the pawl to be depressed to disengage the pawl from the ratchet teeth when said members are retracted, or moved toward each other, but will come in contact with the pawl, move it into engagement with the ratchet, and hold it there against disengagement when the members are reversely moved or extended, as upon the insertion of the tree into a shoe.
The drawing illustrates, in side elevation, a shoe-tree embodying my invention in position in a shoe, the shoe being shown in section, andthe position of the parts of the tree during its insertion and removal appearing in dotted lines.
In the embodiment of the invention selected for illustration, 1 indicates the fore part, which may be constructed of wood, metal, or any other suitable material. In the rear portion of the fore part a kerf is preferably formed, to receive the end of a lever 3, which may conveniently be 0011- nected with the fore part for pivotal movements relatively thereto, by a pin, 2, or any equivalent means. The lever 3 is provided upon one edge with a series of ratchet teeth, 5, and at a suitable point between its edges, with a slot, 4, which latter extends toward the rear extremity of the lever.
The heel part, 14, of the tree, may, as shown, be formed of rounded, or ellipsoidal form, and connected therewith is an arm, 10, having an extended and laterally bent portion, 13, to constitute a handle, and the arm being pivotally connected with a slide 7, by a pm, 11, or the like. The arm 10 is provided with an extension beyond its pivot pin 11, having one portion of its edge, 15, formed concentric with the pin and another portion thereof, 16, cut away to present a cam-like edge the part 16 being located nearer to the pin 11 than the part 15. The slide 7 is preferably constructed with two sides and a bottom portion, and between its sides receives the lever 3, which is arranged along the side of the arm 10 and is adapted for adjustment longitudinally thereof. The pin 11, which pivotally connects the arm and slide, also passes through the slot 4 in the lever 3, and thereby assists in guiding the lever in its movements relatively to the slide, as well as securing the lever, slide and arm, together. A pawl, 9, is pivoted to the slide by a pin, 12, and has its forward end provided with a tooth which is arranged to engage the teeth of the ratchet 5, and its rear end located above the extension of the arm 10, as shown.
In operation, prior to the insertion of the end of the pawl and permit, such end to be depressed to release the pawl from engagement with the ratchet. The lever 3 maythen be moved freely, in either direction,
along the slide and arm until the. proper adjustment of the tree has been effected, the fore part and the heel part inserted in a shoe, and: the handle i'18 depressed to straighten the toggle and force saidv parts snugly in position against the toe portion and counter of the shoe. In this operation the rotation. 'of-the arm lOabout the pivot 11 will cause the part 1'5 tohengage the rear end. of the pawl and automatically effect the reengage ment of-the pawl with the ratchet.
. Certain features of the tree shown capable of embodiment in a structure wherein the cam surface -16is omitted, togetherwith its function, arenot claimed herein, but are claimed in a co-pending application, Sen
No. 525,358,: filed by meOctober 29, 1909.:
' The invention is notlimited by the details of construction herein illustrated and described, but such details may be varied and the invention may be embodied in other forms without departing from the principles thereof, as set forth in .the following claims. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters, Patent ,of the United States is l. A shoe-tree, comprising a fore part and a heel part, two'longitudinally adjustable toggle members connecting saidparts, and
means for maintaining said members in various positions of adjustment constructed and arranged, to be'rendered effective when the toggle is straightened and to be rendered ineifective when thevtoggle is broken.
2. r A shoe-tree, comprising a fore part and a heel part, a connection between said parts including two pivotally connected members arranged for relative longltudinal ad ustment, means for maintaining said members in adjustedposition, and a device controlled by the movement of said members about their pivotal connection for locking said means against movement.
A shoe-tree having, in combination, a
fore part and a heel part,a member connected with each of said parts, a connection between said members constructed and arranged to permit relative pivotaland longitudinal movements thereof, and means controlled by the pivotal movement of the members to lock them in, adjusted position.
4:- A shoe-tree, comprising a fore part and a heel part, a member connected with one of said parts and provided with teeth, a member'connected'with the other part and carrying a pawl to cooperate with said teeth, means connecting said members for relative pivotal and longitudinal movements, and means carried by one of the members for holding the pawl in engagement with any oneof the teeth when the tree is positioned in a shoe, but arranged to permit the pawl to be released from such engagement when the tree is removed from a shoe.
5. A shoe-tree, comprising a fore part and a heel part, a member connected with one of said parts and provided with teeth, a slide mounted adjustable on said member and car- ,rying a pawl to cooperate with said teeth, a second member connected with the other of said parts and pivotally connected with said slide, said member having a cam-shaped portion constructed and arranged to hold the pawl in engagement with one of the teeth when the members are extended to position the tree in a shoe but to permit the pawl to be released from such engagementwhen the members are retracted to remove the tree from a shoe. 7
6. A shoe-tree, comprising a fore part and a heel part, a member pivotally connected with one of said parts and provided with teeth and a slot, a slide mounted on said member and carrying a pawl to cooperate with said teeth, a second member connected at one end with the other of said parts and provided at its other endwith a cam to engage said pawl, and pivotal means connecting said second member and slide and passing through the slot in the first-named member, said parts being so constructed and arranged that -when the members are extended to position the tree in a shoe the cam will hold the pawl in engagement with one of the teeth but when the members are retracted to remove the tree from a shoe the cam will permit the pawl to be released from such engagement. 1
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
