SHOE-FORM.
scares.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 11, 1907.
Patented July 12, 1910.
Serial No. 396,948.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH W. STRAGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have in vented certain Improvements in Shoe- Forms, ofwhich the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawlngs, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to shoe forms, followers and lasts, which are employed for determining, preserving or restoring the shapes of boots and shoes.
The invention applies more particularly to that class of shoe forms which are made in two parts so connected that they may be relatively moved to be easily inserted into or withdrawn from a shoe, and also adjustable in length so that one form may fit shoes varying in size.
An object of the invention is to provide ashoe form which may be conveniently and easily adjusted in length when desired, which is of more simple construction than those heretofore in use and which can be easily and cheaply manufactured.
In the drawing, showing a preferred form of the invention, Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of the form; Fig. 2 is a partial plan View showing the heel part in horizontal section.
In the figures of the drawing, 1 represents a forepart and 2 a heel part which is adjustably connected to the forepart by means of an intermediate member 4. The forepart is provided with a slot at its rear end in which is inserted one end of an intermediate member 4, said member 4 being hinged to the forepart by a pin 6, arranged in a trans- Verse passage in said forepart. The heel part is provided with a longitudinal passage 8 formed to receive the member 4. As shown in the drawing, the forward part of the member 4 is flattened, while the rear portion is cylindrical in transverse section. The forward part of the passage 8 is substantially the same in section as the flattened part of the intermediate member, so that the heel part is held from turning upon said memer. The rear portion of the member 4 is provided with a series of lateral notches 10, arranged at intervals.
A horizontal cavity 12 is provided in the heel part intersecting the longitudinal passage 8. In the cavity 12 a plug 14 is arranged, which may conveniently be composed of wood with a metal plate 16 secured in its inner end, said plate 16 having a slot 18 through which the member 4 extends. As is shown in Fig. 2, the heel part 2 is normally held from movement upon the member 4 by engagement of the plate 16 with one of the notches 10. A spring 20 is arranged in the end of the cavity 12 to hold the plug in engagement with said notches.
To prevent the heel part 2 from being accidentally removed from the member 4, a stop is preferably provided to limit rearward movement of the heel part upon said member. In the construction shown the forward part of the member 4 is provided with a slot 22, and a pin 24 carried by the heel part is arranged in said slot. The heel part is provided with a handle 26 for use in manipulating the form.
In the use of the form shown in the drawings, when it is desired to vary the length of the form the plug 14 is pushed inwardly to disengage it from the member 4 and the heel part may then be moved upon said member to the point desired. It will be seen that when the plug 14 is disengaged from the member 4 there is considerable liability of the heel part being moved too far rear-- wardly and the provision of the stop 24 prevents the accidental dismembering of the form which would result from such a movement. The plug 14 as shown in Fig. 2 in its outermost position is flush with the side of the heel part, so that in the use of the form the portion of the heel part which engages the shoe is smooth and uninterrupted.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A form, or tree, for insertion in boots or shoes, having in combination, a forepart, a member pivotally connected at one end to the forepart and provided at its other end with a series of notches arranged at intervals in its length, said notches being formed in one side of the member, a heel art provided with a longitudinal passage 'ormed to receive said member and having a horizontal cavity intersecting said passage, a plug arranged in said cavity and provided wlth a slot to receive said member and arranged to hold the heel part from movement upon said member by engagement with said notches, and a spring arranged in said cavity between said plug and the bottom of the cavity to hold the plug in yielding engagement with said member.
2. A form, or tree, for insertion in boots or shoes, having in combination, a forepart, a member pivotally connected at one end to the forepart, having at its other end a series of square notches in one side arranged at intervals longitudinally thereof and provided with a slot intermediate its ends, a heel part provided with a longitudinal passage formcd to receive said member and having a horizontal cavity arranged to intersect said passage, a plug arranged in said cavity having a slot to receive said member and adapted to hold the heel part from movement from said member by engagement with said notches, the notches opening toward the 20 ried by the heel part and arranged in the 25 slot of the member to limit movement of the heel part upon said member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RALPH STRACHAN. lVitnesses FRANCIS HANNIGAN, JAMES R. HooDER.
