To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Pnosrnn 0613 1, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at St. Hyacinthe, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Lasts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

description of the invenclear, and exact enable others skilled in the tion, such as will art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to shoe lasts.

The object of my invention is to provide a last, comprising two or more parts arranged together so that the last may be extended longitudinally and the parts locked to prevent movement with relation to each other; and which may be unlocked to permit shortening of the length of the last and to permit a rocking movement of one part with relation to the other when the last is shortened.

My invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein illustrated, described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated a form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts and in which:

Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the last showing the locking parts in elevation and in unlocked and shortened position;

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the last, showing the locking parts in elevation and in locked and extended or lengthened position;

Fig. 3 is an elevation of the movable looking member; and,

Fig. 4 is an elevation of the fixed locking member.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates the toe member and 2 the heel member of a two-part last or form upon which shoes are built or may be placed. The toe member 1 at its rear end is provided with a vertical slot 1 and the heel member 2 is provided at its front end with a corresponding vertical slot 2, to receive the locking and securing means hereinafter described.

The toe member 1 at its rear end is provided with a rounded bearing face 3 and the heel member 2 at its front end is provided with a corresponding rounding bearing seat 4, to permit a rocking movement of the heel I member 2,

A movable plate 14 is disposed on the plate 6 so that a hole 15 therein registers with the hole 10 which receives the lower pin 8 and is pivotally retained in position by the pin, so as to permit a slight rocking movement plate 6. I

The plate 14 is provided with a central opening 16, to permit its rocking movement, a pin 17 being disposed through the toe member 1 extending through the slot 11 of the plate 14 and through the opening 16. The plate 14 is further provided with a looking edge 18, so arranged as to ride behind a pin 19 which is disposed through thetoe member l transversely ofits axis, by means of which the plate 14 may be locked against movement, thereby locking the heel member 2 against rockable movement.

The plate 14 is provided with a recessed seat 20 arranged to receive a bent spring 21 the upper end of which rear side of the pin 7, so that a tension is exerted toward the heel member 2 with the result that the locking member 14 when in the position shown in Fig. 2 will be mainuntil the tension of the spring is overcome. The locking plate 14 is provided with a projecting portion 22 which extends beyond the plane of the last, to permit rocking of the plate 14 against the tension of the spring 21. The plate 14 is further provided with a guiding edge 23 forming a continuation of the locking edge 18 which rides behind the pin 19.

With the parts as shown'in Fig. 2 and the last being inside of'a shoe, to remove the same without disturbing the lining or distorting the shape of the shoe, the handle 22 is pressed toward the left hand carrying the heel member 2 and through leaving its forward end projectbears against the thereof with relation to the looking edge 18 the le 13. Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with a last comprising a toe member and a heel member, of a connecting member fixed to and extending from the heel member to the toe member, securing 'members extendingtransversely through the toe member and said connecting member, a pivotally'mounted locking member adapted to co-act with the securing members'and a spring adapted to maintain the parts/locked while in one position.

2. A last comprising a toe member, a heel. member, a connecting member fixed on and extending from the heel member to the toe member, securing members extending transversely through the toe member and the connecting member, a locking member pivoted to the connecting member and adapted to coact with the securing members, and a spring carried by the locking member arranged to bear on the locking member for the purpose set forth.
