SARAH E. ESSLINGER, 0F SI-IEFFIELD, IOWA.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
Application filed February 19, 1915.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH E. EssLrNGnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheffield, in the county of Franklin, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to garment fasteners and particularly those of the hook and eye type.
It is the object of my invention to provide a garment fastener of the type named which will secure the edges of the garment together in close proximity and in suclr manner that the fastening is entirely hidden from view.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a garment fastener in which it is practically impossible for the elements thereof to become accidentally disengaged from each other thereby always assuring the wearer a closed garment.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and coinbination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to 'the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the fastening showing one'of the elements secured to a garment;
Fig. 2, an edge view of the fastening with both elements detached from the garment;
Fig. 3, a perspective view of one element attached to a garment, and
Fig. 4, a perspective viewof the other element detached from the garment.
Referring to the drawings my improved fastening is shown as comprising a member A which I will term'the hook and a member B which I will term the eye.
The hook member A is shown as formed from a single length of wire bent upon Specification of Letters Patent.

itself and having its terminals further bent to form attaching eyes 10 and 11. The opposite sections of the wire from which the member is formed are 4bent outwardly a slight distance inward of the eyes 10 and 11 to form wing portions 13 and 14 and the portions of the wire between the wings 13 and 14 and the eyes 10 and 11 is offset so as to dispose the eyes 10 and 11 and the wings 13 and 14 in different planes. rIhe opposite portions of the wire from which the member is formed are contracted at 15 to form another eye 16. The member B is secured to the garment C through the medium of stitches 17 passing through the eyes 10 and 11 and through the garment, the eye 16 being disposed nearest the edge of the garment.
The member B is also formed from a single length of wire bent upon itself to form a shank 18 and attaching eyes 19, the end of the shank 18 remote from the eyes 19 being offset as at 20.
In securing the hook member to the eye member the wings 13 and 14 of the former are passed between the eyes 19 and then A the connecting portion between the eyes 10 and 11 and wings 13 and 14 forced between the sections of the shank 18 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
W'hat is claimed is In a hook and eye, a hook member formed from a single length of wire bent upon itself and further bent 'to form a pair of attaching eyes at the terminals of the wire, and intermediate lateral V-shaped wings, said wings being disposed in offset relation to the attaching eyes, and an eye member formed from a single length of wire bent upon itself to form a shank, and having its terminals further bent to form attaching eyes, said shank having its outer end offset from its inner end to form locking shoulders which coperate respectively with arms of the V-shaped wings.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
SARAH E. ESSLINGER.
