Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Application filed November 13, 1918. Serial No. 262,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Join: A. THOMPSON, a subject of the King of England, residing at Webb, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of buckles, buttons and clasps, and more particularly to separable fasteners.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved separable fastener of the hook and eye type, so constructed as to be readily connected or hooked, and easily separated, the said hook and eye being capable of attachment to garments of various sorts without sewing, and obviating the necessity of using buttons and button holes, as well as providing a device which will not readily unhook and which is not only ornamental, but capable of general use, strong and durable.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arran ement of parts which will be more fully described herein and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which like reference characters indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hook and eye connection or fastener,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof as shown in Fig. 1, the parts being connected but unapplied, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved hook and eye fastener includes a hook 10 and an eye 11. The hook 10 is preferably made of suitable section of wire doubled upon itself at two points, providing a transverse portion 12, with the end portions 13 thereof bent inwardly as shown at 1 1, thus providing a transverse or T-shaped hook, the shank portions of which are twisted about each other intermediately between the ends of the portion 12, as shown at 15, at right angles thereto, the remaining ends being bent outwardly in convergent relation, as shown at 16 and finally downwardly as shown at 17, the tapered ends be ing designed to penetrate thegarment adj acent to oneedge of a part to'be fastened to a cooperating part. The portions 17 are designed to penetrate the material, said portionsgbeing tapered or dotted lines in :Figs. 1 and2.
The eye element of the fastener, comprises a section of wire bent intermediately upon itself, to provide an open loop 18 having a restricted throat portion 19 produced by the side portions 20 thereof, said side portions being then extended outwardly in opposite directions as shown at 21 and rebent upon themselves inwardly as shown at 22 in substantially spaced parallel relation to the parts 21, with curved end portions, thus providing an elongated transverse loop designed to receive the transverse hook or T- shaped member 12, the shank portion 15 being designed to spring through the restricted thread 19 and into the open loop 18, as is clearly shown in the drawings. Also, by having the portion 12 substantially as long as the loop formed by the portions 21 and 22, the hook portion 12 of the element 10 must be inserted in the eye or loop, while extending in a common direction to the length thereof, that is transversely to the element 11 and when engaged in the open loop 18, will be held from displacement.
The remaining portions 22 extending inwardly, are twisted about each other a suitable number of times, as shown at 23 and then directed outwardly as shown at 24, the extremities being extended at right angles as shown as 25, parallel to the portions 17, to penetrate the edge of an opposing part of a garment designed to be detachably connected thereto. These end portions 25 are also designed to be bent upon the portion 24, so as to be placed against the material of the garment.
It will be obvious that the device can be applied to garments of various sorts, and besides being ornamental, will be capable of very quick application and removal, thereby permitting it to be re-used. The device will also greatly facilitate the connection of garments and will also be strong and durable.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding, of the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
A hook and eye fastener comprising a section of wire bent upon itself at two points to provide a transverse T-head portion and having inwardly extending parts twisted to produce a shank portion at right angles thereto, said extremities then being bent out? wardly and downwardly at right angles to provide tapered shanks adapted to penetrate and to clench the hook to the garment part,
the head and shank being perpendicular,
and an eye bent intermediately to provide an elongated oval shaped open loop with a forwardlyedirected eye ortion in the same plane with the loop portion, the end portions of the wire forming the eye portion being intertwisted to produce a shank at right angles thereto and having the extremities thereof bent outwardly and downwardly to provide engaging portions adapted to penetrate theopposing parts of the garment and to be clenched thereto.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
JOHN A. THOMPSON.
