CONNECTION FOR :DRAFT-RIGGING DRAW-BARS AND YOKES.
i connections for draft rigging draw-bars and yokes.
An .object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for connecting a standard draw-bar with a yoke, said means being adaptable to single piece cast yokes or yokes of the two-part type.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements of the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts andl devices, as herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sideelevation of a yoke and draw-bar showing my improve ments in connection therewith, the draft gear being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and l4 are vertical sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 2 and 4-4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the attaching blocks. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing my improvements in connection with a yoke of the two-part type.
In said drawing and referring to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, 10 denotes the draw-bar and A the yoke which, as shown, is a single piece cast yoke having upper arm 11, lower arm 12, rear connecting piece 13 and hooded forward end comprising upper wall 14, lower wall 15 and side walls 16-16. The upper wall 14 and lower wall 15 of the hooded end of the yoke. are provided with laterally olf-set, perforated ears 17-17 and the side walls 16H16 are provided with forwardly extended, perforated ears 18-18, the perforations of the ears 17 and 18, on each side of the draw-bar, being alined and adapted to receive removable pins 19-19, said pins being secured in place by suitable cotters 20-20 passed through slots in the lower ears 17, said cotters being spread apart Specification of Letters Patent.
l .Application led March 18, 1915. Serial No. 15,346.I
on their inner ends in the usual manner. To effect the connection between the yoke and the draw-bar, I provide a pair of blocks 21-21, each of like construction. Each block 21 is substantially U-shape in transverse cross section, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 4, and at its ends is perforated as indicated at 22 to thereby receive the pins 19--19 therethrough, the blocks 21 at their outer cylindrical ends 23 being of such a height as to snugly t between the ears formed on the hood of the yoke. On their inner sides, each block 21 is provided with a face 24 corresponding in contour to the adjacent face of the draw-.bar shank. At its inner end each block is provided with a shoulder 25 engageable with the usual shoulders 26 of the draw-bar butt.
The blocks 21 are attached tothe drawbar, one on top and the other at the bottom, and the draw-bar with the blocks then inserted into the hood of the yoke with the perforations in the blocks brought to alinement with the perforations of the ears 17 and 18. After this, the pins .19-19 are inserted and secured in place by the cotters 20. As will be apparent, upon forward movement of the draw-bar, the shoulders thereof will engage the blocks21 and the latter in turn through the medium of the pins 19-19 which are in multiple shear, will pull the yoke forwardly therewith. Under buff, the draw-bar is movable inwardly of the yoke independently thereof.
In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the blocks 121 are the same as those shown in the other figures and are placed on the drawbar 110 in the same manner. The yoke, however, in this instance is formed in two pieces A and A each of like construction and having a loop, not shown. At their forward ends, each loop half yoke member A and A is provided with a top wall 114, lower wall 115, the same being perforated to aline with the perforations in the blocks 121 and also to aline with aperforation in the ear 118 extended forwardly from the side wall of each yoke member A A.
In this construction, the parts are assembled as previously described and in addition to transmitting the pulling strains from the draw-bar to the yoke, the blocks 121 serve to prevent lateral separation of the yoke members A A. Also 1n this construction where the yoke is formed 1n two parts, independent relative longitudinal movement is permitted between the yoke members to accommodate the unequal pulling strains when the yoke is swung laterally from its central normal position.
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred method of carrying out my invention, yet I am aware that various changes and modications may,be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I contem-` plate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim zl. A yoke for draft riggings having parallel arms and provided with side plates at the front end thereof, -blocks each having a shoulder on the inner side thereof arranged to engage a shoulder of a draw-bar, and means for detachably connecting said blocks to said side plates.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a draw bar having upper and lower transversely extending shoulders, of a yoke having parallel arms, a pair of upper and lower detachable blocks arranged to fit over the upper and lower faces of the draw bar and engage said shoulders, said blocks having their ends ex'- tending laterally beyond the side face of the draw bar, and means, located outside of the side planes of the draw bar and forwardly of said shoulders, for detachably connecting said blocks to said yoke arms.
3. In a draw-bar and yoke connection, the combination with a draw-bar having Copies of this patent may be obtained for upper and lower shoulders, of a yoke having a plurality of perforated ears at its forward end located to the sides of the drawbar, upper and lower blocks fitting the upper and lower faces of the draw-bar shank and engaging said draw-bar shoulders, the ends of said blocks fitting between said perforated ears, and detachable pins passing through said perforated ears and the ends of said blocks for connecting the latter with the yoke.
4. In a draw-bar and yoke connection, the combination with a draw-bar having upper and lower shoulders, of a two-part yoke, each part having a series of spaced', perforated ears at its forward end, blocks extending transversely across the top and bottom of said draw-bar and engaging the shoulders thereof, and means for connecting said blocks with said perforated ears of the yoke parts.
5. In a draw-bar and yoke connection, the combination with a draw-bar having upper and lower shoulders, of a two part yoke divided longitudinally thereof, blocks extending transversely across the top and bottom of said draw-bar and engaging the shoulders thereof, and means for connecting said blocks with said yoke parts and thereby preventing lateral separation of said parts.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 4th day of March 1915.
