To'allf'zo hom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY F. SCHWARTZ! "NBERG, a citizen. of: the United S tates, re-
; siding at-Chica'go, in the county of Cook and State.- of Illinois, have invented. a certain new and usefulImprovement' in Draft-Big? ging for Railway-Cars, of-which the following a, full, clear, concise, andexact description,- reference being had to: the accompartying drawings, forming'a "part of this Specification.
; In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a plan view of a- My invention relates to improvements in draft yokes for railway car draft rigging.
. The object of my invention is to provide a yoke of simple and strong construe:
draft yokeembodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a side elevation partly inverticallon gitudinal section, with the butt and rear li'ne13.-3 of Fig.- 2.; Fig.4 is a cross section; 25
Referring to'the .6 and 7 represent the upper and lower limbs p'ortion of the shank of a draw bar shown in dottedlines. Fig. 3 is a cross section on on line 4 4of Fig. 2 .Fig'bfi is a rear end Y 'ewof the yoke. v v drawings the ,numerals respectively of thedra'ft yoke, 88 detachable connecting plates, 9 the intermediate yoke thimble, 10 the rearyoke thimble, 11 the shank 'of the draw bar and 12 the draw bar butt, the' rear portion of the draw bar only being shown by the dottedlines in Fig.
2. ofthe drawings. y l I The detachable connecting. plates 8, are arranged 10118 on either side of the draw bar,
' each h'avin a tiansverse slot,13, registering with the. s 0t 14, through-the draw'bar to receive, thecoupler key 15, "shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Each plate is provided with upper and lower transverse slots 16 and 17 respectively, registering with "the upper and lower transverse slots 18 and 19 respectively through the forward ends of the limbs 6 and 7 of the'yoke. The slot 18 in the upper limb '6 is disposed through v a preferably enlarged forward portion 20 of W said limb and likewise the slot 19 in the shoulders 22---22witli which the ordinary- Specification of Letters Patent. draw bar is providedupper and lower front yoke keys 23 and 24 respectively passlng through registering slo'ts in the plates 8, and the forward ends of the limbsof the yoke secure said members together. Suit-- able means, preferably the cotter pins 25 25, are employed to secure the keys 23 i and 24 "within' their respective slots, each plate 8, being preferably provided both at the top and bottom of its outer face with an.
offset portion or shoulder'26, having a perforation 27 registering with a suitable perforation 28 in the-inclosed yoke key for the I passage of a cotterpin 25.
The intermediate himble 9,'is -a' cored shaped'member having upper and lower outwardly opening grooves, 29 and 30 respectively, to receive respectively the upper limb 6 and-the lower limb .7 of the yoke longitudinally therein. The said thimble 9 is preferably laterallyprovided with upper and lower: ofis'et portions or shoulders 3131, and upper. transverseperforations 33 for the passage respectively of the upper,
te'rmediateyoke key' 34, and the lower intermediate yoke key' 35. The upper key 34 passes through a slot 36' in the'upper limb 6 entering preferably through the enlarged portion .37 thereof. The lowerkey passes through a transverse slot 38 in the lower limb 7, preferably provided through the en-- larged portion 39. thereof. The intermediate yoke, keys are securedagainst accidental displacement by the cotter pins 40-'40, passing preferably through alined perforations in the shoulders 31, and the inclosed key. The interme diate thimble "9 is preferably formed by the lateralzpla'tes 4141 connected between the. limbs of the yoke b'y-the preferably integral upper, and lower cross pieces 42 ja'nd 43, respectively and bythe front and rear preferably integral plates 44 and 45 respectively, each of the last mentioned plates being provided with the cored opening 46. The upper and lower cross. pieces 42 1and '43, 'forin respectively the bed of the upper groove 29 and of'the lower groove 30.
The rear thimble 10 is'preferably a 'rear- 'wardly opening hollow member formedb'y the side plates 47-47, the preferably integral upper. and lowercross members4-8 and 49 respectively, and the front preferably integral plate-.50, the thimble being H shaped in cross section and having an upper-rout,-
yoke and the slot 56 in the lower limb of the yoke, the upper slots to receive the upper rear yoke key 57 and the lower ones to receive the lower rear yoke key 58.
At their rear endsthe limbs 6 and 7 of the yoke are each provided with an inturned 'gib 59 to engage an adjacent shoulder 60 with which the rear yoke thimble 10 is rem-- wardly provided.
I11 preferable construction the rear thimble 10 is provided with the internal vertical longitudinal preferably integral strengthening rib 61. The rear yoke keys 57 and 58 are provided with the perforations 62-62 each to receive a cotter pin 63 passing through alined openings 64 in an offset portion or shoulder with which the rear thimble 10 is in preferable construction provided at the upper and lower portion of each outer lateral face.
The articular form of my invention illustrated in the drawings is a yoke adapted for tandem arranged draft gear,
I claim-- 1. In a draft yoke for railway car draft rigging in combination, a pair of limbs, transversely extending keys and a connecting thimble, the thimble having upper and lower outwardly opening grooves to receive the limbs, the keys extending across said grooves and securing the limbs therewithin.
2. Ina draft yoke for railway car draft rigging in combination, a pair of limbs, a connecting thimble having outwardly openinggrooves to receive the'limbs, and a keyv for each of said limbsthe thimble having transverse slots to receive the keys.
3. In a draft yoke for railway car draft nieaase rigging in combination, a pair of limbs, a
connecting thimble having outwardly opening grooves to receive the limbs, and a key for each of said limbs, the limbs and thimble being slotted -to receive the keys.
4. In a draft yoke for railway car draft rigging in combination, a pair of limbs, a
other end and a pair of keys, the plates and limbs having alined slots to receive the keys.
6. In a draft yoke for railway car draft rigging in combination, a pair of limbs, means connecting the limbs at one end, a pair of independent plates at the other end and keys, each limb being' keyed to the plates.
7 In a draft yoke for railway car draft rigging, the combination with a pair of limbs each of which is slotted transversely, of a plurality of members for detachably connecting the limbs, each of said members being also transversely slotted, and keys passing through the slots of saidmembers and said limbs. v
8. In a draft yoke for railway cardraft -pair of independent lateral plates at the riggings, the combination with a pair, of
limbs, of a hollow connecting thimble provided with transverse slots at the ends thereof, and a transversely extending key at each end of said thimble passing through said slots and arranged to hold the limbs in Witnesses:
