NITED STATES PATENT OFrIcE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLAITED TRIMMINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,663, dated January 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson. and State of New Jersey, have invented and made an Improvement in Plaited Trimmings; and the following isdeclared to be a correct description thereof.
Linen and other fabrics have been made up by folding the same into plaits, either close together or lapping upon each other, and the ends of such plaits at the edges of the fabric have been secured by lines of stitching.
My invention is a new article adapted to collars, cuffs, trimmings, &c., consisting of a plaited fabric folded double and the plaits drawn apart toward one edge so as to make one edge longer than the other and form an undulating or sector-shaped article, adapted to collars or cuffs, in consequence of the conical form into which such article can be rolled; or to trimmin g of dresses or clothing, in consequence of the undulating character thereof. The plaits in this article are tapering and the material of double thickness, and in consequence of the plaited material being folded double-previous to the plaits being drawn into the tapering form the fabric will retain its proper shape while being manipulated, so that the taper of the plaits can be made with great uniformity, and they can then be secured in position by a line of stitching, so that the plaits will not be disturbed by washing or ironing.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents the folded plaited fabric; and at a a the same is in a straight condition; but at b bthe plaits have been sufficiently stretched or distended to make them tapering and throw the article into the segmental or sector form. Fig. 2 represents the plaited fabric as folded; and I remark that the line of stitching isto be applied at c 0 previous to distcnding the plaits so as to hold the fabric in shape, and after the plaits have been distended one or more lines of stitching at "i 'i will secure the other ends of the plaits and ornament the article.
I claim as my invention- The doublefabric with tapering plaits, made as specified, as a new article of manufacture.
Signed by me this 8th day of November, A. D. 1871.
