Be it known that I, HARRY J. Moxsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Burner Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lamp burner attachments, and has for its principal object to provide a device which may be readily applied to a burner for oil lamps and used to extinguish the flame.

Another object of the invention is to provide a safety appliance which will prevent explosions in case the lamp tips over or is upset.

A. further object of the invention is to provide a device which will automatically extinguish the flame upon tilting the lamp.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an extinguisher which may be operated to choke the flame and thereby avoid the necessity of blowing out the light which is the usual practice.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates a lamp base of the usual construction the upper portion of which is perforated as at 2. The usual hood 3 is pivoted to the base at 1 and the base carries the ordinary chimney supports 5. ment 7 by which the burner is attached to the lamp. The burner attachment is desig nated generally by the numeral 8 and will be more fully hereinafter described.

The attachment above referred to, comprises the sleeve 9 which fits over the wick tube and is formed with the lugs'lO which project from each end thereof. T hese lugs form the bearings for the jaw members 11, each of which comprises the plate 12, havin g the flanges 13 formed at its longitudinalv extremities and the flange 1 formed at its upper lateral. extremity. Suitable arms 15 extend from the lower edge of the end flanges and are bent at right angles and apertured to it over the lugs 10 and thereby pivotally hold the members in place. Extending outwardly from the lower edges of the plate 12 are the flanges 15, the use of which will appear as the description proceeds.

Slidably mounted on the wick tube 6 is the plate 16 which is formed with the ex tensions 17, and these extensions are arranged to engage the flanges 15 to cause the jaw members to close when the plate is moved upwardly. In order to move the plate upwardly upon the tipping of the lamp the weights 18 are secured to the lower ends of the stems 19 which in turn are secured to the disks 19 which are located beneath extensions 17 of the plate. These stems 19 extend through openings formed in the perforated top member 2 of the base 1 and are slidable therethrough.

In order that the jaws may be manually operated to extinguish the lamp, the lever 20 is pivoted as at 21 to the lamp base, and the end of the lever is formed with the I pressure plate 22 against which the user presses when it is desired to extinguish the lamp. An angular extension 23 is formed at the upper end of the lever and is preferably bifurcated to form the arms 24; and 25 which are bent upwardly and angularly so as to extend through two of the openings in the perforated plate 2 and engage the under that in use when this device is placed on a lamp and the same tilted, the jaws will be closed as the weights will tend to swing the disks as shown in Fig. 5 and thus force the plate upwardly against the jaws thereby extinguishing the light and preventing many of th accidents occurring under such cir cumstances. It is also apparent that the fire danger will be eliminated as there is no possibility of the flame contacting with the oil reservoir. W hen it is desired to extinguish the lamp, instead of blowing the flame out as is the usual practice, a slight pressure on the plate 22 will cause the aws to close over the opening of the wick tube and thereby choke or extinguish the flame. It is evi dent that this feature will also remove much of the danger accompanying the use of lamps of this character since there is no possibility of the flame being blown against the oil chamber or reservoir.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed is The combination with a lamp burner including a wick tube, of a sleeve carried by said wick tube, oppositely disposed lugs, formed on said sleeve, jaw members pivoted on said lugs and extending upwardly and outwardly upon each side of the wick tube, a plate slidable on the wick tube, extensions formed on each end of the plate, flanges formed on the lower ends of the aw members and resting upon the extensions,weights pivoted to the burner, and disks secured to the weights for engaging the extensions to move the jaw members in engagement with each other upon lateral movement of the weights.
