To all whom it may concern:
Be is known that we, AARON El. MANDEL and MAXIMiLIAN Horn, citizens of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Changeable Signs, of whichtho following is a specification.
An object of our invention is to provide on opposite edges of the sections, a simple form of telescopic joint to directly connect the section, a portion of which joint forms card receiving grooves. it further object of our invention is to provide a simple form of interlocking joint for cards, the unlocking of which cards is prevented by their engagement in the sections of the supporting frame.
The various other objects of the invention will be more fully set forth in the following description of one form of mechanism embodying the invention which consists in the new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of card receiving sections disclosing a preferred embodiment of our invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a portion of the device shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a pair of locked cards dismounted from the sections.
Referring to the drawings the frame 1 comprises horizontally arranged card receiving sections 2 directly connected with each other to form a frame of any desired number of lines and connected so that the distance between the lines of lettering need only be suflicient to accommodate the joint between the sections.
Each card receiving section 2 is preferably an integral sheet metal member comprising a substantially flat face plate 3, the upper edge of which is bent forwardly to a position approximately parallel to the face plate to form a flange 5. The lower edge of the section is bent forwardly to form a flange 6 comprising three parallel plies, an inner ply 7 continuous with the plate 3, an outer ply 8 continuous with the inner ply and an end ply 9 continuous with the outer ply and disposed between said outer and inner plies.
The flange 5 of a lower section is telescopically inserted endwise into position to Specification of Letters Patent.

The cards 10 are preferably sheet metal members of small gage adapted to lap adjacent vertical sides. Adjacent opposite ends the lapped portions are passed through each other to form a locking joint. This joint is formed by cutting a bayonet or l.-shaped slot it in the lapped portions of each card, one leg of which slot extends at right angles to the side edge and the other leg of which extends parallel to this edge.
The cards are interlocked by buckling one of the cards slightly and inserting the edge legs of one card into the slots 14 in the other and then flattening the cards thus moving the ends parallel to each other and locking the cards in position relative to each other. The finger 15 formed by the slots '14 will then parallel each other preventing relative movement to and from each other. This interlocking will prevent horizontal movement between the cards and the engagement with the grooves 11 and 12 will. prevent any vertical unlocking movement.
The cards must be withdrawn from the holding section before they can be disconnected from each other and there is thus prevented any unequal spacing or disalining of the letters.
In order to keep the front faces of the cards in alinement the lapped portions of one of the cards may be depressed or offset out of the plane of the body of the card, as shown at 17.
By means of a sign of this character it is possible to form a sign of as many lines as desired and as the card receiving sections are directly connected with each other there is no lost space between succeeding lines of lettering as the cards actually lap each other vertically.
The particular form of joint disclosed may be economically formed and a direct connection is provided between adjacent secti-ons, which maintains the sections parallel to each other and at the same time a minimum amount of metal is used which, due to the particular formation of lapping parts, forms a reinforced joint which mafy be made of thin and even flexible metal.
Although we have shown only one form of mechanism embodying our invention, it is obvious that various changes within the skill of the mechanic may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, provided the means set forth in the following claims are employed.
We claim as our i1 vention 1. In a sectional sign supporting frame, a plurality of detachable card receiving sections, a forwardly extending flange on the lower edge of each section, said flange comprising an upwardly extending inner ply spaced from the face of the body of said section, to form a groove, a downwardly extending outer ply spaced from the inner ply, an end ply extending between the inner and outer plies in spaced relation thereto, a forwardly and downwardly extending flange on the upper edge of said section, the upper edge of each section extending between the inner and end plies of the section next above, and the upper flange of each section extending into the space between the end and outer plies of the section next above, the upper edge of each section being spaced from the end ply of the section next above to provide a groove parallel with the first mentioned gro ve to afford therewith means for the reception of the edges of a sign section.
2. An article of manufacture designed to constitute a sign element and including a sleet provided with a flange on its lower edge, said flange comprising an upwardly extending inner ply, spaced from the face of the body portion of the sheet to form a groove, a downwardly extending outer ply spaced from the inner ply, an end ply extending between the inner and outer plies in spaced relation thereto, and a forwardly and downwardly extending flange on the upper edge of said sheet.
An article of manufacture designed to constitute a sign element and including a sheet provided with a flange on its lower edge, said flange comprising an upwardly extending inner ply, a downwardly extending outer ply spaced from the inner ply, an end ply extending between the inner and outer plies in spaced relation thereto, and a forwardly and downwardly extending flange on the upper edge of said sheet.
