Be it known that I, ARoirreALo Moll lan- TIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Interchangeable Hand-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to interchangeable hand coverings, or, in other words, to hand coverings which may be worn on either hand, and the primary aim of the invention is to provide a hand covering of this class which will be adapted to fit either hand equally well.

Another aim of the invention is to provide a hand covering of the class mentioned of such construction that it may be manufactured from a minimum amount of material and with but little waste.

It is, of course, wellknown that the natural position of the thumb of either hand is slightly in advance of the palm and that the fleshy portion of palm at the base of the thumb protrudes beyond the plane of the central portion of the palm. It is therefore essential that a hand covering of this class to be comfortable to the wearer when applied to either hand, shall be so constructed that the joint at the base of the thumb may have freedom of movement so that the thumb may assume its normal position without inconvenience to the wearer of the hand covering. It is also essential, in order that the hand coverings of a pair may be interchanged, that the thumb sheath extend laterally from the hand covering in a plane between the palms, for if the thumb sheath be located more to one side than the other of the hand 40 covering, the hand coverings of a pair cannot be interchanged without being uncomfortable, in one of their positions. The present invention therefore aims to provide in a hand covering of this class a thumb sheath 45 occupying a position exactly midway between the palm portions, comprising the body of the hand covering, and so united at its base to the said palm portions as to permit of full freedom of movement of the 50 joint at the base of the thumb.

It is also an aim of the invention to so construct the palm portions and the thumb sheath and to so unite the thumb sheath at its base to the palm portions, as to provide palm portions and the inner side of the base portion of the thumb sheath.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.

The principles of the invention may be embodied in the construction of any type of hand covering, and hence it will be understood that the following specific description which applies to the mitten shown in Fig. 1, is merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention. Furthermore, it will be understood that the term palm portion used in the specification and claims, refers to the two sides which comprise the body of the mitten, as the case may be, and in either position of either hand covering of a pair, one of these portions will constitute the palm of the hand covering and the other the back thereof.

Tn Fig. 2, which illustrates the blank from which the body portion of the mitten is formed, the palm portions are indicated by the numeral 1, and these portions have substantially parallel edges 2 and substantially coextensive straight lower edges 3. The upper edge of the blank is out along curved lines 4 extending from the lateral edges of the palmportions 1 to the longitudinal median line of the blank, these curved edges meeting at the median line, as indicated at 5.

From its lower edge 3 the blank is formed I with a slit 6 which is coincident with the longitudinal median line of the blank and which extends from the said lower edge of the blank to a point slightly below the transverse median line of the blank, from which point the blank is formed with slits or incisions 7 which branch from the slit 6 and diverge in the direction of the curved edges 55 a relatively wide crotch between the said of the palm portions. The formation of the slits 7 results in a substantially V-shaped'j flap 8 having its apex presented toward the lateral edges extend along diverging lines from the said inner end to about the transverse middle of the blank, as indicated at 9, and that the said edges, throughout the remainder of their lengths extend along converging lines, as at 10, in the direction of the outer end of the blank, the outer end edge of the blank being out along curved lines, as at 11, and these edge portionsmerge with the edge portions 10 and meet at the longitudinal median line of the blank, as indicated at 12. Between the edge portions 9 and 10 the blank is formed with substantially V-shaped incisions 13, that side of each incision adjacent the edge portion 9 being of less length than the other side thereof. The inner end edge of the blank is also formed with a substantially V-shaped incision, indicated at 1 1, the sides of which extend at an obtuse angle.

In assembling and uniting the blanks shown in Figs. 2 and 8', the blank shown in Fig. 2 is folded at its longitudinal median line and the edges 2 and 4: of the palm portion 1 are stitched together, as indicated at 15, in Fig. 1. lhe blank shown in Fig. 3 is then folded along its longitudinal median line and the edges 10 and 11 of the said blank are united by a line of stitching, as indicated at 16 in Fig. 1. The thumb sheath blank in this condition is then assembled with the body portion of the hand covering by inserting the edge portions 9 between the palm portions 1 through the slit 6, with the edges of the incision 14: extending along the edges 3 of the palm portions whereupon one or more lines of stitching 17 are run through the said palm portions at both edges of the slit 6 and through the said edge portions 9 of the thumb sheath blank, the edge portions 9 underlying the edges of the palm portions to the extent indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the V- shaped flap 8 of the body blank being in this manner positioned exteriorly of the mitten in the crotch between the thumb sheath and the adjacent side of the palm portion of the mitten. The apexes of the incisions 13 will be brought into substantial coincidence with the upper end of the slit 6, and the palm portions are then spread apart and the incisions 13 spread or opened so that the flap 8 will bridge the crotch between the palm portions and the thumb sheath. The said flap will overlie the joined lower corners of the edges 10 and the edges of the opened or spread incisions 7 are stitched to the meeting longer edges of the incisions 13 thereby closing the crotch between the thumb and palm portions and lending width thereto.

From the foregoing description of the invention, it will be seen that the base of the thumb sheath is much longer than in the ordinary hand covering and that, in fact, it extends from the crotch between the thumb sheath and the palm portions substantially to the wrist line of the hand covering. It will also be observed that the said crotch is relatively wide. As a result of these features of construction, the joint of the thumb at the base thereof and the fleshy portion of the palm of the hand at the base of the thumb will be comfortably accommodated when the hand covering is applied to either hand and freedom of motion of the thumb is in no way interfered with.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An interchangeable hand covering com prising a palm member anda thumb memher, the palm member being formed with a straight slit substantially cutting the lower edge of the said member and extending vertically medially of one side thereof to the thumb crotch of the covering, the thumb member being formed from a blank complete in itself and having its portions at opposite sides of its longitudinal median line of counterpart form, the said thumb blank having a relatively wide upper portion the edges of which are united to form the complete thumb stall proper, the said thumb blank being provided with a relatively narrow and downwardly tapering lower portion the lateral edges of which are fitted within the said slit and united to the palm member at the opposite sides of the said slit, the said lower portion of the thumb member extending throughout the length of the said slit.

2. An interchangeable hand covering including a palm member and a thumb member, the palm member being formed from a blank, the portions at the opposite sides of the vertical median line of which are of counterpart form and constitute associated palm portions, the said palm portions being divided along the vertical longitudinal median line of the blank by a slit extending to the lower end edge of the blank, each of the palm portions being formed with a slit extending inwardly from the upper end of the first mentioned slit; the thumb portion of the hand covering being formed from a blank formed in each lateral edge with a notch, the said lateral edges of the blank converging toward each end of the blank from the said notches, the outer end edge of the blank having arcuate edge portions meeting at the longitudinal median line of the blank, the said blank being folded along its said longitudinal median line to form the thumb portion or sheath and the said thumb portion or sheath having its outer side devoid of connecting seams from the outer end of the said portion entirely to the inner end thereof, the lateral edge portions of the said thumb blank and the arcuate end portion thereof being united by a continuous seam from the said notches to the meeting point of the said arcuate outer end edge portions, the lateral edge portions of the blank between the said notches and the inner end of the blank being disposed Within and united to the edge portions of the palm blank at opposite sides of the slit Which extends at the vertical median line thereof, the portion of the palm blank between the slits which diverge from the upper end of the said slit at the vertical longitudinal median line be ing disposed to overlap the first mentioned united lateral edge portions of the thumb blank at their ends next adjacent the notches and being secured thereto, the inner end of the thumb blank at its longitudinal median line terminating at the extreme lovver ends of the Walls of the slit at the vertical longitudinal median line of the said thumb blank.
