IMPROVEMENT IN TRACE-CARRIERS FOR HARNESS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,364, dated January 2, 1872.

I, EDWARD A. COOPER, of Lancaster, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Trace-Carriers for Horses Harness, of which the following is a specification Trace-carriers for harness consisting of a hook, tongue, or other projecting device attached to or forming part of that ring or frame to which the back, crupper, and hip-straps connect are well known and more or less in common use. My invention consists in the combination with such ring or frame of an ele- Vated frame provided with openings in such manner that the cock-eyes may be readily and securely engaged between said frames, as hereinafter fully explained. M

A represents the ring or main frame of my improved trace-carrier. a a are the portions thereof to which the crupper and back straps, respectively, are attached, and a a the bars to which the hip-straps are secured. B repre sents the elevated frame formed with the main frame A. It is raised above the latter sufficiently to enable a cock-eyeto be introduced between the frames. The frame B is composed of horizontal bars b b connected to the frameAby vertical pieces b b', all arranged so as to form two p openings, c c, corresponding in shape with that of a cock-eye when arranged edgewise to the frame B with the round end toward the` center of the ring A. In order to engage thecock-eyes with the frame B they are placed on edge, or so as to present their least dimension to the frame B, and passed through the openings e c,

when they are turned so as to present their tion represented in Fig. I, the rounded ends of `V the Cooke-yes will be below the corresponding portion of the openings c, so that an accidental disengagement of the cockeyes in this position cannot occur, as a cock-eye can only be disengaged by raising it so as to make it coincide to its full length with the opening c. In Fig. I one cock-eye is represented in the proper position for engaging it with and disengaging it from the carrier, while the other cock-eye is represented en gaged with the carrier. The openin gs c c are preferably arranged converg ing toward the center of `the frame A, to facilitatethe engagement of the cock-eyestherewith.
