specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 24, 1917,
7 Application filed August 5, 1916. Serial No. 113,254.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
' Be it known that I, HERMAN E. MATHIAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Nursery Rattle and Toy, of which-the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptlon.
This invention relates to a nursery article in the form of a combined rattle and toy.
The invention has for its object to provide a rattle which includes a toy in the form of a figure or freely movable object which moves about in the use of the rattle, and the motions contribute greatly to the amusement of the infant. p l
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a rattle having a suitablyshaped body to' which a handle 1s connected, and at least a portion of the wall of the body is made transparent so as to reveal a rolypoly. or any other object which moves freely as the rattle is shaken or tilted, there being also. in thebody, pebbles, shotor equivalent rattling particles which rattle when the article is shaken.
lVith such objects in view and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment. of the mvention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views,
Fi re 1 is aperspective view of the combine rattle and toy; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
Referrin to the drawing, A designates the body 0 the article which is of any approved construction and suitably attached to the body is'ahandle 1 which is preferably provided with ateething ring 2. In the present instance the body A is cylindrical, with hemispherical heads or ends, but this shape or arrangement is not essential, as the body may take a variety of forms.- A portion of the wall of the body is transparent so as to reveal the interior. In the present in- 4 stance the cylindrical part 3 is made of transparent celluloid while the hemispherical heads 4 and 5 are of opaque celluloid of white or any other color. The handle 1 is connected with the head 5, and this head may be provided with a disk or partition 6 to divide the body into separate compartments 7 and -8 In the larger compartment 7 is arranged a roly-poly 9, or any other freely movable figure or object which moves about when the rattle is handled, and as this rolypoly is seen through'the transparent wall 3, its motions addgreatly to the amusement of the infant. The compartment 8 contains a plurality of pebbles or other small rattling elementslO which are concealed from view.
From the foregoing descriptiontaken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the article which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the article shown is merelyillustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus-described my invention, I claim asnewand desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combined rattle and toy comprisin a hollow body having a portion of its wal transparent, a handle connected with the body, rattle elements in the body, and a toy element also in the body.
2. A combined rattle and toy comprising a hollow body having a transparent wall through which the interior of the body is seen, a figure freely mounted in the body to with the body.
A combined toy an rattle comprising a body having a transparent wall, a partiroll around therein, and jhandle connected tion dividing the body into two compartments, one of which includes the transparent wall, a freely movable figure in the compartment having the transparent Wall, rattle elements in the other compartment, and a handle connected with the body.
4. A rattle including a hollow body 'hav- Y ing a transparent wall, a handle connected with the body, and a rely-poly in the body.
A rattle including a hollow .body having a transparent Wall, a handle connected with the body, and a roly-poly in the body, there being a flat surface in the body on which the rely-poly is freely movable.
6. A combined rattle and toy comprising a body, a handle connected therewith, and
a figure freely movable in the body, said 10 body comprislng a cylindrical transparent section, opaque heads, and a partition in one ofthe heads, and rattle elements in the head having the partition.
