This invention relates to amusement devices for-infants and relates more particularly to a novel noise-making device. or rattle which is associated with the upper wall of a dispensing container for baby powder or the like. v
The amusement device of the present invention-comprises the combination with a dispensing can for baby powder of a supplemental upper wall forming a closed chamber astride the powder chamber which contains solid particles such as.
lead shot which produce a characteristic rattle sound as the powder can is shaken for the purpose oi applying the powder to the skin.
5 An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be applied to a conventional talcum powder can with shaker top without requiring any alteration what'- soeverin the design or constructionof the can. ,Another object of the invention is to provide an amusement device of the character described which can be readily appliedto the powder can ai ter the same has been filled with powder and is otherwise ready for packaging.
..,Yet another object of the invention is the provision of a child's rattle or thelike formed in combination witha baby powder can which in no .way alters the. effective dimensions of the conventional can so that when the rattle assembly has been applied to the filled can, the lattermay be packaged in the same size of cardboard box that is presently used for the same powder container without the improvement of the present invention.

It further includes a dispensing top including an.
upwardly extending central section l6 having openings I'ltherein and an annular flange 18 around the upper edge. A rotatable cap or clo-. sure 2| is rotatably carried by this section, the edges of which are downwardly turned to form a continuous flange 22 which engages the lower edge of flange l8-to prevent removal of the cap. Openings 23 in the cap register with openings ll... All the foregoing is conventional.
. The improvement constituting the present invention comprises a housing which may be formedoi sheet plastic, suitably molded to shape, sheet metal,or other material. It includes a top wall 2.4. and a continuous, downwardly extending flange .25 which is received around the ex-.
terior "of flange l3. It may also have an outwardly extending flange 26 which is seated on flange l4.
.1 The central section of the upper wall is defined by a recessed portion comprising a downwardly extending annular wall 30 and an upwardly extending annular wall 3| which terminates in a horizontal section 32 whose inner edge defines a circular opening. This circular opening is of substantially the samediameter as the external diameter of the side wall 33 of raised section l6 of the top section of the container.
A plurality of spaced, radially disposed slots 34 extend inwardly from the edge of the circular opening through the annular wall section 3| and atleast a part of annular wall section 32. If the housing is formed from sheet metal these slots may have vertical walls although if it is formed ofmolded plastic they are preferably of dove-tail contour and wider at their lower ends as shown at .35 Fig. 4 since it is more expeditious to form the molding die in this manner.
, .Tomount the housing on the can the housing may first be inverted and the small shot 36 then placed within the housing after which the cen-.
tral dispensing portion of the can is aligned with the central opening. The rotatable closure 2| is then-forced through the opening, causing the. jaw; sections 3| toretract during this passage. As soon as the jaw sections clear the flange 22 they snap; inwards into engagement with cylindrical wall 33 and the housing is locked in place. During this passage the flange 25 of the housing moves downwardly over flange l3 H In the'rnodifi'ed arrangementriof Fig.5 the top 38 of the container hasa slightly longer neck 39' and the rotatable cap 4|] is also somewhat longer than that shown in Fig. 3. The lower edge 41' of the housing 42 in this instance rests. upon the: upper wall 43 of the top and the upper edge 44 of the housing thus occupies a lower position relative to the rotatable cap. Thus, the cap is more readily rotated since there-'moreufingen; room as will be evident from a comparison of Fig. 5 with Fig. 2.
