Description

5. B. FLAGG CLOSURE FOR BOXES July 15 1924.
Filed Oct. 17. 1922 Patented July 15, 1924.
I TAT onosunn non :B'oxEs.
Application filed October 17, 1922. Serial No. 595,055.
State of Connecticut, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a closure for boxes which are utilized for receiving such ticle) of the character described, which is capable of simple construction, ready production, and by which no substance can be accidentally discharged from a box equipped with the cover.
In the drawing accompanying and forming part of the present specification, I have shown in detail two of the many forms of embodiment of the invention which will be set forth fully in the following description. Obviously, I am not restricted to such disclosure. I may depart therefrom in a number of respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claim following said description.
Referring to said drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a box equipped with a cover involving the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of'the box, with the cover off.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1 of the upper portion of the box.
Fig. 4 is a somewhat similar view of a modified cover.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 55 looking upward.
. Fig. 6 is an isometric perspective view of the upper portion of the box with the cover being threaded thereon.
Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The box with which the cover is intended to be used is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 8. It is usually of some composite substance and is molded into proper shape. Its upper portion or top 3 has in it a slot or hole 4 comprising a, central circular portion, and a segmental portion extending outwardly from the circular portion. The box 2 has a cover or cap as 5, the down turned bib of which fits and turnsjupon the top of: the box body 2 and to aid in holding the cover in place, its depending "b-i b oi flange may have interiorly thereof the annular head 6, which is pressed into an annular groove er channel 7 near the upper edge of the box, when the cover is applied.
The cover or cap 5 is generally made of block tin although the material may be of any proper nature. This cover or cap 5 has upon it a central depending boss 8, which constitutes a pivot and which is introduced into the circular portion of the slot or hole 4. To aid in preventing the displacement of the cover or cap 5 this central boss 8 is near its lower portion outwardly expanded as at 9. In the cover or cap 5, is a slot as 10 of segmental shape. Laterally separated from said slot 10 and in the cover or cap 5, is a series or group of perforations as 11.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings the slot 10 is in register with the outer segmental portion of the slot 4 so that when the box 2 is tipped up the contents of the box 2 can be withdrawn through the registering slots 10 and 4. The cap or cover 5 can be rotated to bring the perforations or orifices 11 into register with or over the segmental portion of the slot 4 so as to sift through the cover or cap 5 a part of the contents of the box. The cap or cover'5 can be further turned to its normal position, so as to bring a solid part of the cup or cover 5 over the segmental portion of the opening 4 to close the top 3 against the discharge of any substance. When the openings 11 are in register with the segmental portion of the slot 4, the contents of the box 2 can be sifted through the segmental portion of the slot 4 and also through said openings or perforations 11.
In Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive the box is denoted by 2'. It has a cover or cap 5. This box 2 has the top 3 furnished with a slot 4 having the central circular perforation. The cover or cap 5 has on the under side thereof the disk 12 which can be riveted to the cover or top 5 as by the rivets 13. The disk 12 may have cut from its peripheral portion the tongue 14. The cover 5' is applied to the top portion of the box 2' and the disk 12' is passed downwardly through the central circular portion of the slot 4', and the cap 5' is then turned. This will make the tongue 14 function after the fashion of a screw and it will be threaded over the free edge of the box top 3' at the opening or slot 4' to prevent the accidental re- 7 moval of the cap 5.
It is to be distinctly understood that the cap or cover 5 or the cap or cover 5 which is the equivalent can be made and sold in conjunction with other kinds ofboxes such as 2 or 2.
What I claim is:
A box of cylindrical form, having a circular central'opening and also having a segmental portion leading from said opening, a cover for the box of practically cylin drical form and of tin, having a pendant central pivot portion extended into said opening, also having aslot through its top and furnished also with a series of perforations, the cover being turnable 011 the box so as to cause the slot to register With the segmental portion in the cover or to cause the perforations to register with said segmental portion.
In testimony whereof I hereby aflix my signature.
