Description

A. K. ASHMON. CHIMNEY HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN- 23; I9I7' 1,223,233. Patented Apr. 17, 1917.

' INVENTOR 5 WITNESS ATTORNEY .ANNA.K.,,ASHMON, OFSALEM, OREGON.
CHIMNEY-HOLDER.
Specificationpf Letters Patent. p t t 7,
Application filed January23; 1917; Serial No. 144,089.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANNA K. AsHMoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Marion andState of Oregon, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in Chimney-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a chimney holding device for lamp burners.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to produce an extremely simple, cheap and thoroughly effective device of this character comprising a band adapted toen: circle the lower portion of the chimney or that portion engaged by the spring arms of the burner, the said band being provided with spring means whereby the same is removably associated with the said spring arms of the burner and whereby the band and arms will cooperate to draw the arms in the direction of the band and to retain the band in frictional engagement with the chimney.
I accomplish the above objects and others by a construction and combination of parts, a satisfactory exemplification of which being illustrated by the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the improvement,
Fig. 2 is a central sectional View taken through the retaining band,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the band in its spread condition and looking toward the inner face thereof, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view approximately on the line 4, 4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawing, thenumeral 1 designates any ordinary construction of burners provided with the spring chimney engaging arms 3, and the numeral 3 designates the chimney which; is arranged upon the burner. Disposed to surround the lower tubular portion of the chimney which is engaged by the spring arms 2 of the burner is a flexible metallic band 4:. The band upon its outer face is provided with a plurality of longitudinally arranged spring catch members 5, corresponding in number with that of the arms 2. One end of the band is provided with an eye 6, and the other end forms what may be termed a tongue which is designated by the numeral 7 and which is adaptedto be passed through the eye 6 and to be bent able distance from the eye and from the tongue thereof has its edges i-nturned over its inner face, as indicated by the numerals 8, and the said bent edges are adapted to engage a strip 9' of compressible non-heat conducting material, such as a strip of as bestos or the like. By this arrangement it willbe noted that the band maybe firmly clamped around the chimney and that the chimney may be arranged upon the burner and rotated so as to permit of the catch members 5 each engaging with one of the spring arms 2 of the burner, thus forcing the arms toward the chimney and tending to more tightly clamp the band upon the chimney. The device, it will be noted, is extremely simple, and when arranged as above described will positively prevent the accidental removal or dropping of the chimney from the burner.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: a
1. In combination with a burner having spring arms and a chimney engaged by the arms, of a band surrounding the burner and engaged by the spring arms whereby to frictionally engage between the said arms and the said chimney, and said band having an inner compressible facing.
2. In combination with a burner having spring arms and. a chimney engaged by the arms, of a band surrounding the chimney and'contacted bythe arms,a compressible strip upon the inner face of the band, and spring means upon the outer face of the band engaging with the arms of the burner,
as .and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a lamp burner having spring arms and a chimney engaged bythe arms, of a flexible metallic band disposed to be arranged to surround the chim ney and to be contacted-by the arms, said band having one of its ends formed with an eye and its other end formed with a bendable tongue adapted to be passed through the eye and to be bent over the said eye, a facing of compressible non-heat conducting material upon the inner face of the band, and means upon the outer face of the band for engaging with the spring arms of the burner.
4. In combination with a burner having spring arms and a chimney adapted to be engaged by the arms, of a split band disposed to surround the chimney and to be tudinally arranged spring catch members contacted by the arms, means upon the edges uponthe outer face of the band adapted of the bands for adjustably retaining the to engage one With each of the spring arms 19 same upon the chimney, said band having of the burner.
5 its longitudinal edges inturned, a strip of In. testimony whereof I affiX my signature.
compressible non-heat conducting material arranged between the said edges, and longi- ANNA K. ASHMON.
