ROPE AND BUCKET COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.

T0 ail whom itmay concern.- gggBe it known that I, WESLEY F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bandana, in the county of Ballard and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Rope and Bucket Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rope sockets and it has for its object the provision of a novel device for this purpose which maybe securely fastened to the end of a rope and which is adjustable to different sizes of rope.
My invention consists in the novel parts, improvements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In this specification and in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof the same reference characters are applied to the same parts throughout.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing my improved socket secured upon the end of a rope. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the rope holding clip. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the sleeve which is passed over the said clip. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are cross sectional views showing my secured socket secured upon ropes of different sizes.
Referring to the parts shown in the drawings by reference numerals 1 designates the rope to the end of which my improved socket is designed to be secured.
2 indicates a clip in the eye 3 of which the bail of a well bucket or other object to be secured to the rope is received. The clip 2 also comprises laterally curved duplicate arms 4 adapted to receive between them the rope 1 and having inwardly projecting points 5 which penetrate the rope.
On the outside of the arms 4 of the clip, which arms with the rope therein are of a substantially cylindrical form, I place the elastic split sleeve 6 which is made of substantially the same length as the arm portions 4. of the clip 2. When the sleeve is placed over the clip it is turned so that the opening in the side of the said sleeve, will come over one of the arms 4 as shown in Fig. 4 thus producing a neat appearance. The sleeve 6 being thin and in frictional contact with the arms 4 of the clip 2 throughout its entire length is not liable to be moved out of place accidentally.
It is evident that a socket of my construc tion may be placed upon ropes of varying sizes by simply spreading the arms 4 and sleeve 6 more or less. The clamping device 6, being constructed in the nature of a sleeve, can be assembled in such a way as to form a cover for the gaps between the adjacent edges of the arms 4. The sleeve will thus effectively prevent the lodgment of dirt on the rope in the space between the arms and also exclude water, so that rotting of the rope at the oint where it is attached to the coupling will e prevented.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a clip having an eye and a pair of parallel arms of arc-shaped cross section which are smooth on their outside and adapted to be sprung apartor toward each other through the resiliency of the eye, inwardly extending barbs fixed to the arms for biting into a rope inserted between the latter, and a cylindrical sleeve slotted longitudinally at one side to permit it to be expanded to engage over the arms and grip the same with a radially acting pressure at all points on the arms, said sleeve having a smooth internal surface engaging substantially the entire external surface of the arms to be held frictionally in place thereby.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of connected parallel arms of arc-shaped cross section which are adapted to be spread apart or drawn together for adjustment to ropes of different sizes, projections upon the arms arranged to pierce the rope, and a single piece spring clamping device engaging'around the arms with a tension constantly urging the latter together and arranged to cover the gaps between the adjacent edges of the arms, said device comprising a sleeve of a length co-extensive with the arms and split at one side longitudinally for permitting the same to be assembled over the arms.
