IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED COAL-HODS AND SIFTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,147, dated December 26, 1871.

Specification describing certain Improvements in Combined Coal-Hod and Sifter, invented by RALPH BOGLE, of Milton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania.

My invention relates to the peculiar construction and arrangement of a detachable sittingpan with a coal-hod, provided with a' detachable cover, whereby the ashes and coal which fallfrom the grate of a coal fire, can be readily placed therein and separated without permitting the dust to escape from the hod during the opera- I tion of sifting, and so, also, that the said cover and the siftingpan, with screened coal in the latter, can be readily detached and the hod leftfree to be used as a coal-hod only.

Figure 1 is a 'vertical longitudinal section of the combined coal-hod and sifter in the line V W of Fig. 2. Fig. 2is plan view of the same without the cover.

Thehod A is constructed in the usual form and manner, and is provided with a detachable cover, a, whereby the dust produced during the operation of sifting therein the coal and ashes from a grate fire,- will be prevented from escaping. The sifter B is a shallow pan, having its bottom nearly flat and perforated by numerous small holes which will allow the ashes to pass freely from the lumps of coal when the sifter is being agitated. The boundary sides I) of the sifter B correspond in form with the boundary sides a" of the hod A, but the length and breadth of said sifter are made shorter than the length and breadth of the upper part of the hod A for the purpose of allowing sufficient room for being agitated when suspended within the coveredhod.

The said sifter is supported upon two projecting stems or bars, b"b, fixed to its respective ends, the longer one 1) serving also as a handle for agitating and lifting the same. At the midwidth of the spout of the hod A there is arectangular hole, a, which allows the stem'b of the sifter to be freely introduced and moved longitudinally backward and forward therein, and at the opposite end of the said hod a square open slot, at, is made, which allows the handle stem 1) to be readily placed therein and the cover or lid a of the hod to be applied, so that the sifter can be readily moved rapidly backward and forward to separate the ashes from the coal previou sly placed therein without allowing the light dust to escape to the outside of the hod, and, after the sifting operation has been completed, allowing the cover a of the hod to be removed and the sifter B to be readily detached and lifted out with its contents of coal, and the hod A to besubsequently used as such or without the encumbrance of the sifter and cover.

I do not desire to claim, broadly, a combined coal-hod and sifter but a The hod A, lid or cover a, and sifter B, the said parts being constructed and arranged substantially as described and set forth.
