IMPROVEMENT IN SCREENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,440, dated November 30, 1875; application filed July 14, 1875.
- ing machine, showing-my improved screen D attached to the rear of the furnace G. Fig. 2 represents a flat screen in a square or oblong form. It is a mere variation or modification of the cylinder-screen D in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the flat screen.
The object and use of my invention are to produce a screen in which the meshes or openings can be varied to suit any sized substance that may be required to be cleaned of impurities or foreign particles, or where one part is to be separated from the other, as in screening coal. To accomplish this object I construct the screen of such material, size, and shape as best suitable for the purpose for which it is to be used.
'In'the screen D, Fig. 1, the slats or ribs 1 1 .1 are pivoted to the ring or frame E E, as
'shown, so that, by moving the side pieces together or apart, the spaces between the slats will be reduced or enlarged to the required width to suit the different kinds of substances to be screened. J is a brace, pivoted at one end and having a slot at the other end, provided with a set-screw to permit the slats being adjusted as desired. 0 is ascreen, slightly concave, being another modification of my screen, placed at the mouth of a bluing-furnace, Fig. 1.
' My screen is peculiarly adapted to the cleaning of nails of all impurities while going through the process of bluing. It (screen 0) is so arranged to the motive power that it receives-a traverse or shaking motion.
Themanner of using the cylinder-screen D is this: Motion is imparted to the several working'parts. The nails to be screened and blued are placed on the screen 0, which cleans from them a large portion of the impurities, such as scales, slivers, headless nails, &c. They then pass through the bluing-furnace G into the cylinder-screen D, Where they are cleaned completely of all foreign particles, the
dirt, scales, ac, falling into the receptacle H, and the clean and perfect nails into receptacle K, Fig. 1.
When different-sized nails are to be screened the ring E is turned to the right or left sufficient to close or open the spaces between the slats, as desired, and thenthe whole is secured in position by the set-screw in the band or brace J.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A cylinder-screen, D, composed of adjustable slats I I I pivoted to end rings E E, and
secured by band or brace J, substantially as shown, and for the purposes herein set forth.
LUKE FITZPATRIOK.
